Pleasant Grove Soldier Honored as "Outstanding Trainee of the Day" Gene Mathews, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Mathews of Pleasant Grove, has been honored as "Outstanding "Out-standing Trainee of the Day" according ac-cording to a letter received by his wife Mrs. Laweita H. Matthews, of Salt Lake City. The leiter reads as follows: Dear Mis. Matthews: It gives me great pleasure to inform in-form you that on 10 August 1955, your husband, Private Gene IX Matthews, was selecU-d as the "Outstanding Trainee of the Day" by the Armored Replacement Center. As a result of his selection, selec-tion, Gene became a member of my personal staff for Wednesday. We of the Armored Replacement Replace-ment Training Center feel that in selecting the "Outstanding Trainee Train-ee of the Day" we not only provide pro-vide recognition for work well done but also aid and assist promising prom-ising young men in becoming better bet-ter acquainted with the Army and its organization. Gene was selected because he is outstanding in his personal attitude, atti-tude, military bearing, personal appearance, coduct, military courtesy, cour-tesy, and training. Therefore, his selection as the "Outstanding Trainee of the Day" may well be a matter of great pride to you. I congratulate you on the excellent excel-lent record your husband is making. mak-ing. He attended the Carbon County Schools until the family moved to Utah County in 1942. He graduated from the PI. Grove High School in May, 1950. He volunteered in the U. S. Armed Ar-med forces April 5, 1955 and is now serving at the Armored Replacement Re-placement Training Center at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Gene married the former Laweita Law-eita Harp of Vernal, Utah, in Sept. 1950. The couple have two young sons, Michael Jean, 4, and Dennis James, 2. Mrs. Matthews and the children live in Salt Lake City where she is employed as a secretary. |
