Waterman pooled their resources to open a general merchandise store in American Am-erican Fork. The community was still a sprawling cattle camp in those days but the settlers flocked in to get household scarcities or plunked down their equally scarce money for a bolt of blue flannel that cost $5.20 or a spool of thread that cost 23c or a bottle of gin that cost $1.00. Founder James Chipman was engaged en-gaged in freighting by team between be-tween Utah and California when he saw the opportunity to establish a general merchandise store here. The store was opened for business bus-iness at its present location and in 1879 Chipman became the sole proprietor and for five years carried car-ried on with original facilities until un-til the demand created the need for a bigger store. In 1888 he erected er-ected the first part of the present standing building of the company. The growing concern was incorporated in-corporated in 1892 and Stephen L. Chipman, a son of the founder, was appointed manager. With this change, James Chipman established establish-ed residence in Salt Lake City and later became the state's first treasurer. In 1912 another major remodeling remodel-ing project was undertaken to keep pace with the growing demands. In 1926 Stephen L. Chipman relinquished re-linquished managership to accept a mission call, and William Chip-man Chip-man became manager in trie place of his brother. The company weathered the depression de-pression years and in 1944 a major remodeling of facilities was again undertaken including an attractive modernistic front for the building. William Chipman died in May, 1945 and the directors subsequently subsequent-ly appointed Leo G. Meredith as general manager of tne large institution. |
