Show f rii' . 1 ' S li ivestDckTi' The use of cottonseed cake has done much for the cattle industry of the Southwest. In fact, many ranchers ranch-ers believe that the use of cake as a supplemental feed has played an important im-portant part in stablizing cattle values and has also allowed cattlemen cattle-men to make the turnover without having to carry the thin end another season. The use of cake on the ranch not only helps to fatten the "critter" j but it makes a better quality of beef. ; Not all concentrates are available for range feetling because of the ' waste but the use of any supplemental supplemen-tal feed that hastens beef maturity is I a move in the right direction. Cottonseed Cot-tonseed cake is rather plentiful in the Southwest and is priced to sell. ' Nut form is the most practical and is' spread out regularly in certain 1 places so that the cattle soon find out where it is and go to it. "When the i range is exhausted, concentrates and roughage in the feed lot is the way' to early marketing. It is noticeable' too that the ranchers are putting up' some hay each year to be used in carrying over young stock and finish-1 ing the immature. W7e can't ever be- 1 gin to estimate the loss under the-custom the-custom of a few years back, in iett-1 ing the unfinished steers rustle their way to another grass season. The ' loss of weight of those that survived the endurance test was enormous, to say nothing of the number that fell by the wayside. j J Eess supply and consequent higher j price levels have ma'de the rancher ! scratch his head and think seriously j of the new conditions confronting ; him in handling a much more valu-1 i able product, meaning that where he lost a dollar under the old system he would lose several dollars under the new order of things. The rancher also finds that the people want bettor i quality meat and this calls for better sires, and that heavy aged kinds are ! seasonal, hence the outlet is limited as against the younger, lighter and ! better finished first to sell on the market and at the top price, j Cake used on the range has undoubtedly un-doubtedly contributed to orderly mar- ' keting by slowing up the seasonal flood movement of grassers which was confined to a period of three or four months of the year, so if the use of supplemental feeds accomplished only that, it would still be worth while, but it has done more by showing show-ing the way to cash the cutbacks, (bus avoiding the heavy loss of flesh and cost of carrying over another scasan. In this connection, we should also keep in mind that the feeding out of our cattle that did not finish on grass gives the cowman access to the market mar-ket on a much higher price level prevailing, at the season of the year ? when grass cattle are out of the way I and warmed up and feed lot cattle are available for slaughter purposes, f That period is usually November 1st to June 1st. I The general practice of feeding, well on its way throughout Califor- ! nia and adjoining states, has created j f a demand for feeders so if the ranch-1! er is not. in a position to carry them ' I along to a finish, he has a chance to j j cash them to go on thirty, sixty or f ninety day fec'J whereas heretofore. I the packer alone has been relied up- t on to purchase the half fat kinds and I no mailer how you figure it, there f is an economic loss in the premat are 1 I slaughtering of live stock. The natural trend of things is f rapidly forcing a recognition of the'f need of more up-to-date methods ami'! only by keeping step wilh this march j of progress are we able to ward off ' the old unsatisfactory and unprofit-'f able condition. j |
