Show C. C. Camp News On Sunday, October 11, ftt 3;0o a m. n social train stopped at Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove station, carrying seventy six new CCC enrolloes. These boys are all from Kentucky. At 6:00 a in. the boys answered to roll call' placed their basigaRe on the trucks! then lined up in two groups. Captain Cap-tain Mayfield kxi the first group and Sargeiuit Wilkins the other, and marched the boys to camp. ' The whole day was spent in issuing equipment, clothing, etc., and acquainting ac-quainting the boys with the camp. At 3:00. a special dinner was sewed, which was enjoyed by all. The group was called to the recreation hall at 4:00 p. m. where Captain Mayfield introduced the leaders assistant leaders, and Forestry personnel. per-sonnel. He then explained to the boys the duties of each group, and pointed out their duties and obligations obli-gations as CCC Enrollees. In his talk, Captain Mayfield placed special emphasis on their being be-ing placed in a camp so favorably situated as to location and the splendid hospitality afforded the boys by the people of Pleasant Grove, American Fork and Lehi. A special plea was given for the boys to take advantage of their opportunities opportu-nities and not betray or take advantage ad-vantage of the confidence placed :n them as a group. Superintendent Hyde explained the work projects and the value to every man of doing an honest day's work. He then invited the boys to take part in the social and religious functions of the community ar.d to add their part as citizens to our civil life. Dr. Taylor then pointed out the importance of right and clean living liv-ing and explained that the deatn rate was lower in the CCC than in any other group today. The opportunity for bettering themselves either by way of a job ! training or academically was ex- i plained by Educational Adviser, Mr. i Merrill. I The boys were then given an opportunity op-portunity to express themselves or ask questions after which they were dismissed and allowed to leave camp for a few hours if they so desired. Monday evening. Chaplain Curtis arrived in camp bringing with him two girls who entertained the boys with singing, readings, and a talk by Chaplain Curtis followed. Last Saturday, the whole camp was busy planting shrubbery which were secured from the mountains by special permission from the Forest Ranger, Mr. V. N. West. About seventy plants were transplanted. Tuesday morning the long waited for pool table arrived and is being enjoyed by the whole camp. |
