Show O . PLEASANT GROVE CANNING CO COLD PACKS STRAWBERRIES The farmers of Pleasant Grove and Orem were thrown into a panic last Saturday when, the strawberry market prices dropped to 3 cases for $1.00. That price would scarcely pay for the cases and picking. Many of the growers said that they could not afford to pick their berries at that price. The outlook was some what brightened bright-ened Monday morning when the Pleasant Grove Canning Company and the Utah Cold Pack Corporation at Snow Station began cold packing berries. This made a big difference to growers, pickers and all concerned, concern-ed, releaving the market of the glutted glut-ted condition. The price paid by the cold pack concerns will average 60 to 65 cents and the certainty of a ready market means much to the producer. However, another snag in the business busi-ness was encountered Tuesday when both packing concerns were faced with the shortage of barrels, and to a delay in the arrival of the cars containing plenty of barrels for the season's pack. Salt Lake and other state firms, helped in this and it is hoped that the plants at Orem and Snow, will be able to handle the berry crop that is at its peak this week. The hum of industry sounds good to all, if it is of short duration. Housewives are doing their preserving preserv-ing this week and next while the berries are at their best. |
