Show Postmaster Asks Improvements To Extend Service Changes requisite to the extension of the postal delivery service in American Fork improvement of sidewalks and numbering of houses and streets will be undertaken by the city, the city council decided at a session Monday night. Postmaster S. T. Shelley reported that the post office plans to extend delivery service, but that certain things would be necessary before the additional service could be established. establish-ed. Houses must be numbered, streets named, and an estimated 12 blocks of sidewalks should be graveled, grav-eled, he pointed out. Upon motion of Councilman William Will-iam S. Storrs, seconded by Christen-sen, Christen-sen, the council approved the compliance com-pliance with the requirements, and assured Postmaster Shelley to that effect. The council approved the appointment appoint-ment of a committee to meet with WPA workers, business representatives representa-tives and WPA officials at Provo, to discuss the methods of drawing up projects for the city. The action was taken after a group representing represent-ing the Workers' Alliance and a group of business men asked the council to launch new work projects. Leo G. Meredith and Moral Steele, representing merchants of the city, stated the merchants are interested in securing projects for the workers. They suggested that the city sponsor curb and gutter, street widening, street oiling, city-wide improvement, and lake road projects, continue the cemetery improvement project, and establish commodity distribution centers. Representing the Workers' Alliance, Alli-ance, Tom Walters, Frank Peterson and Clyde Okey entered into the discussion dis-cussion of the proposed projects. Recorder Karl Bennett was instructed in-structed to communicate with Ben Beveridge of the Utah county Wir-A office and make arrangements for a meeting at which suggested projects might be discussed. Mayor Albert Tregaskis reported on the meeting with the county commission with regard to the street widening project. Leo G. Meredith, secretary and treasurer of the Community hospital board, presented the annual report of the hospital. Upon motion of Councilman A. F. Christensen, seconded sec-onded by Councilman Ellison, the report was approved and a vote of thanks extended to the hospital workers. M. L. Baird and J. F. Walton of the American Fork Lions club proposed pro-posed the repainting of the signboard sign-board at the west end of town. The matter was deferred for investigation. investiga-tion. Fire Chief Walter B. Devey stated that a larger engine had been placed in the new fire truck, at no additional addi-tional cost. The specifications called call-ed for a 130 horse power engine, but a 140 horse power engine had been installed, he reported. The council delegated Chief Devey to bring the truck from Los Angeles to American Fork. Upon motion by Councilman James Tattersall, seconded sec-onded by Councilman G. H. Gordon, the council approved turning over arrangements for an appropriate celebration and program to the firemen fire-men and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. |
