AFH blood bank gains accreditation These standards set the level of professional proficiency for blood banks and transfusion services in the United States and around the world. "Accreditation by the AABB is very prestigious," says Ho. "We all work many long hours to make sure that our blood bank is kept current in meeting or exceeding every stan-dard." At the AFH blood bank, the public is invited to donate blood the fourth Wednesday of each month from 4 to 8 p.m., or by appointment (call Ext. 394) The American Fork Hospital (AFH) Blood Bank was recently awarded a two-yea- r accreditation renewal by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), according to Richard Ho, medical technologist in charge of the AFH blood bank. Accreditation follows an intensive on-sit- e inspection by specially trained representatives of the Association and establishes that the level of medical, technical and administrative performance within the facility meets or exceeds the rigorous standards set by the AABB. By successfully meeting those requirements, AFH Blood Bank joins . more than 2,200 similar facilities across the nation and abroad that have earned the ac-creditation rating and recognition. "Although accreditation is voluntary, it represents a high level of professional and medical ex pertise," says Ho. "The AABB has the strictest set of standards in the nation. As an accreditated blood bank, we meet every one of those standards and comply with all their rules and regulations." According to AABB officials, the primary goal of accreditation is to assist blood banks in achieving excellence, and thus providing higher blood quality, blood com-ponents and other services to patients. The "Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services" are written by a distinguished panel of experts in the field, composing the AABB Committee on Standards. The AABB National Committee on In-spection and Accreditation assures strict compliance with all standards before granting accreditation. The AABB was founded in 1947 and includes in its membership scien-tists, physicians, nurses, medical technologists and administrators.
