Whether you bought a new fur during the August sales or look forward to receiving one as a holiday gift, you'll need to know how to care for it. Store your fur on a well-padded well-padded hanger in a cool, dark place. Don't store it in a plastic bag because furs need to breathe. To protect it from dust and light, cover it with a cloth sheet or a loosely fitting paper garment bag. If you don't wear it often, give your fur an occasional oc-casional brisk shake to allow air to circulate to the pelt. If your fur gets wet, it is usually sufficient to give it a shake and hang it to air dry. Never apply heat to accelerate the drying. The combination of moisture and heat can cause severe, permanent shrinkage and stiffening of the pelt. If the fur is soaked through to the pelt and the lining is wet, take it to a professional furrier at once for remedial care. Your fur should be professionally cleaned at least once a year. This is to remove dust, which might have sifted through to the pelt and acts as a blotter, soaking up natural oils and drying out the pelt.
