Main "V""" 1 Pleasant jfV 1 Grove QU 785 3221 David Faux, Pharmacist ACT and AIDS Television and radio reports about acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are seen and heard almost every day. According to the United States Surgeon General, there are almost 40,000 reported cases of AIDS at this time, and this figure is expected to increase to about 250,000 cases by the end of 1990. Information is being provided by the government and other groups in an attempt to give people an accurate un-derstanding of this condition. Programs have, thus far, described AIDS risk factors and what people can do to minimize contact with the virus that causes AIDS. The first drug that has shown promise against AIDS is azidothymidine (AZT). This drug was studied extensively in 1986 in 12 medical centers before it was given final approval by the Food and Drug Administration. In July, 1987, studies were published in the "New England Journal of Medicine" describing the use of AZT in the treatment of AIDS. One article reported that AZT therapy decreased the incidence of opportunistic in-fections in groups with AIDS and the AIDS-relate- complex. Much research on the appropriate use of AZT and other drugs in these conditions is certain to continue. i HDay & Night Backs Its -- Furnace For As Long As You Live In Your Home t" 1 Enjoy the warmth and security of a Day & Night high-efficien- furnace backed by our new Limited Lifetime Furnace Warranty.
