Show Blue team squeaks past White in alumni game as record crowd, TV enjoy action Bryon Biggs turned a broken play into a 73 yard touchdown run with 19 seconds to play to lead the Blue team to a 17-12 victory in the fifth annual Alumni Football Game Saturday night. Biggs had caught a pitch from quarterback Brian Tobler and rolled out to the right to throw a halfback pass. Finding no receivers open, Biggs scrambled away from the white rush, and, after a series of great moves and cutbacks, outraced the remaining White defenders down the far sideline for the game winning touchdown. The Blue team scored early in the game on a Jeff Strasburg field goal after the While defense had stiffened stif-fened inside the 10 yard line. Trailing 3-0, the White team came right back with Craig Hilton catching cat-ching a 12 yard touchdown pass from Clark Hill. That play capped a 72 yard drive that included two third and one fourth down conversion. con-version. Then, with time waning in the first half, Bryon Biggs broke loose on a sweep and raced 55 yards for a touchdown. Jeff Strasburg kicked the extra point and the Blue team led 10-6 at the intermission. The third quarter proved to be a defensive battle, as neither team scored. The White defense was led by Gary Smith who was voted defensive Most Valuable Player and who was also the oldest player on the field at 38. With six minutes to go in the game, the Blue team was forced to punt and Steve Warner's kick was downed on the White one yard line. The White team (whose inside running game had been shut down most of the night) threw three straight passes, but only netted nine yards, creating a fourth and one on their own 10 yard line. After a time out, the Whites decided to put the whole game on the line and go for it. Mickay Robinson took a pitch around the right side and was thrown for a three yard loss, but the Blue team was guilty of a face-masking face-masking penalty giving the Whites a first down. The White team then moved the ball to mid-field where Gary Moosman hit Darin Frampton with a halfback pass that covered nearly 40 yards. Three plays later, on a fourth and goal from the 12 yard line, Clark Hill again found Craig Hilton, who made a spectacular catch for the touchdown. Members of the White team were Darin Frampton, Mickay Robinson, Kevin Ash, Clark Hill, Chad Henry, Mitch McCuistion, Curt Harrison, Kelly Sanderson, Stony Brooks, Josh Bickerton, Chris Kitchen, John Dennison, Gary Smith, Daryn Smith, Ed Sanderson, Phil Cook, Craig Hilton, Rod Maxfield, Shaun Story and Gary Moosman. Present was the largest crowd ever to see an alumni game. The proceeds went to the PGHS football program and the game was covered by Prime Time Access. |
