Show 'i Soi More holidays needed for newspapers ? p. a. blah By MARCELLA fll U WALKER The kids were just out of school for UEA and upcoming is the Deer Hunt (Harvest Holiday), so the kids and Dad will be out early on Friday and all day on Monday. The city, state and federal and bank employees were off Monday for Columbus Day. I am jealous. While the rest of the family is home having a fun time, I have to join with all the rest of the unlucky ones in the working world and plug away at the job. It would not be so bad if they did not brag about their days off and what a good time they are going to have. I mean,' sleeping in late, watching TV, going shopping to all the sales they have for Columbus Day and for the Deer Hunt. It is not fair. We do not have holidays in the newspaper business. The paper comes out anyway, holiday or no. If ; it is a major holiday we just put the -i paper off a day, but we still work the same number of days. On top of that, the week before Thanksgiving and the week before Christmas we put out an extra addition of the paper. Those are holidays when I could really stand to have an extra day or two off to get everything done that needs to be done. Holidays are nice if you can have them. I remember when I was a kid in school and how nice it was to have holidays. In college you do not get very many days off. Their is no UEA or Deer Hunt. All you get to hope for is school was Miss Ballinger. She had all the girls in the school scared to death. She was the dean of girls. (That is what is now known as a counselor.) Mr. Guff was the boy's dean and he was not nearly as scary as Miss Ballinger. The boys were lucky. Miss Ballinger was old, even then. Her hair was white and it was always nicely styled. I'm sure she was a very nice lady but we students did not know it. The worst thing that could happen was to be sent to Miss Ballinger's office. I don't think they sent anyone to the principal's office in high school. He was Dr. Conroy and a very nice man. You don't send students to a nice man. You send them to the dean. One of the nicest things about going to college was that they did not have a Miss Ballinger. In college they do not send you to the principal. You do not misbehave in college. x .. If you sluff, who cares? College professors go to class, they teach whoever is there and they go home.' They could care less whether you are there or not. You could sluff every day and .no truant officer would come and get you. You would flunk, but other than that there would not be a commotion. com-motion. Of course, if you have caring parents they might raise a ruckus when they saw they had shelled out all those smollions for a flunking grade. Other than that, who cares? Term breaks are nice in college. :( In high school, all you get j, 0 weekend between terms. In you get a few days. On Sunday, there was churcL pictures of a new bishopric, dinnei y to fix, another church meeting pie because my son had to speak, d has visits to the two grandmote Set Actually, I did get to watch a Etlk baseball in there somewhere. dec Holidays are alright. I think 0 toy take a couple sometime. In Ik I meantime I'll stay home and I Oct jealous of all these people havirf 1 free days off. It must be a great life. Gu A that once in a while the professor will have to go out of town to give one of his papers and you get to skip a class. . I thought it was real nice for the war in Europe to end on my birthday in May, 1945. We got to have the day - off from school and it was also my birthday. It was like having two holidays in one. I know there are a few kids at Pleasant Grove High School who take holidays a little more often than they are entitled. Of course, we did not do that when I was in high school. Actually, we had a closed campus unless you were allowed to go home for lunch. But still, a few kids did sluff. I sluff ed once. It was in May of my senior year. I think I may have mentioned it before. The biggest deterrent we had to sluffing in high |
