Kitchen also had 15 rebounds, a season high for a Viking j player. i Vikes trample Lions, 73-59 - By ROBERT BEAN The Pleasant Grove Viking v basketball team dropped Payson 73-: 73-: 59 and took the lead in region 8 iv basketball for the second time this ! season; the first time was earlier on - when the Vikings were 1 and 0 The big win must have been a pleasant surprise for Coach Keith Allred because of Payson's win over Springville last Tuesday, which knocked the Red Devils out of the driver's seat and put Carbon, alone in first place. Springville then beat Carbon Friday night, moving Pleasant Grove into a tie with Springville entering the final game of the regular season this week. Once again it was the guards who put on the show for Pleasant Grove, with Kerry VanDyke and Tracy V Flinders keeping the scorer's table busy. The two guards had 17 and 20 points apiece. Pleasant Grove out-hustled Payson to an early 18-8 lead in the first quarter. By halftime the Vikings had mounted a 16 point lead at 37-21. Payson cut the lead to 11 at the end of three, but the Vikings were able to outrun the Lions' comeback attempt in the fourth quarter. Center Brad Kitchen turned in a good performance scoring 11 points and Scott Mosher added 13 points to the Vikings' cause. Pleasant Grove has already earned a berth in the 3A state tournament. The tournament will run March 11-16. Junior Varsity Playing without defensive aces Ron Simmons and Scott Jensen, the junior varsity fell to Payson 55-50 in overtime. Simmons broke a bone in his foot in Tuesday's loss to Lehi, while Jensen severely sprained a finger on his right hand in the same game. Mark Bronson scored 14 and Nick Starr had 10 to pace the Viking offensive output. Sophomores Coach Bruce Bushnell's sophomores clinched the Region 8 sophomore championship by crushing visiting Payson 74-49. Jeff Harris had 16, Cody Bell, 14, and Robert Fisher, 10, in a game that saw PG break on top 20-12 after one quarter and continue to pull away the rest of the game. The sopi.o have won miic iiraighl in league action, with Tuesday's game with Carbon the last of the year for the sophomores. |
