Show Margo injured, girls lose On Tuesday, Feb. 27, the Lady Vikings split with the Lady Devils from Springville, as the junior varsity won 26-21 and the varsity lost a heart-breaker 47-41. In the junior varsity contest, neither team could find the range on their shooting as the Vikings fell behind 6-3 at the first quarter, 10-11 at half, took the lead 18-15 by the end of the third quarter, and held on to their lead to post a 26-21 win. Jayleen Walker led the Vikings in scoring with 12, Kim Woffinden was next with 7, Melissa Bennett had 3 and Anita Larsen had 2. In the varsity contest, the Lady Vikings suffered more than just a' loss as they lost Margo Nelson for the rest of the year with a knee injury. They played tight man-toman defense and got an early lead and led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, 23-20 at the half and had the game tied 28-28 when Margo when down with her injury. After that the Devils scored the next 6 points and the Lady Vikings could not catch up. Cherylnn Johnson led with 18 points. Margo Nelson followed her with 8, Debbie Fisher had 7, Kathy Maughan had 6 and Lila Fugal had 2. Again the Vikings dominated the rebounding with Lila getting 17, Cherylnn Johnson and Kathy Maughan getting 11 each. Take away the last three minutes of the third quarter, and the Vikings had things going their way. When they lost Margo, they lost the team leader. However, the Vikings regrouped. and almost came back to win the game. Again good team defense, as Kathy Maughan held Camile Larsen, the Devils' second leading scorer, to just 4 points. ' When the Devils went to their stall during the fourth quarter, Jayleen Walker came in to play good defense as did the rest of the team. The Lady Vikings have their last home game next Thursday, March 7, with Carbon. During that game they will be honoring our two senior players, Lorna Joseph and Margo Nelson. Everyone is encouraged to come and pay tribute to the seniors and help the Lady Vikings defeat the Lady Dinos of Carbon. |
