Grove Saints win C Division in Steel Days Tourney ; B Division champs still to be named By DEAN VON MEMMOTT The Pleasant Grove Saints won the C division of the Steel Days Fastpitch Tournament by holding off Batters Up from Salt Lake City 3-1 at the old junior high's south softball field Saturday afternoon. But while the Saints are enjoying their victory, the championship of the B division has yet to be decided, according to tournament director Carl "Blackie" Harris, he said Interstate Transmission and Peterson's Interiors will play for the title sometime this week. In the C division championship game, the Saints and Batters played so well defensively that there was no scoring until the fourth inning. Up until that critical inning, the only man who could make a hit was Batter Ty Nordquist, who singled to center during the second inning. . - In the bottom of the fourth, the Saints picked up a run on a passed ball to break the scoreless deadlock. Soon afterwards, Saint Delynn Rotabeck singled in Bruce Bezzant. Batter third, baseman Rick Richards answered that hit by . turning Chad Wilson's tagged fly . into a double play. Loading the bases in the top of the . sixth, the Batters came really close to pulling ahead. But after Batter Milt Helquist singled in Mark Kaila, the Saints stung the Salt Lake team with a double play to retire it. Slapping a double in the bottom of ' the inning, Bezzant was singled in by Dave Larsen to round out the Saints' scoring. The Pleasant Grove crew went on to hold the Batters scoreless to win the championship. In the only B division game Saturday morning, Interstate nipped Barratt's Builders Supply 4-3. 4-3. Of the two American Fork teams in the tournament, Barratt's seemingly had the best chance of getting into the title game. On Monday, Barratt's floored Batters Up 9-4 in an opening round B division game at Bus Manning Field. Barratt's got on the board first when Gary Brems hit an in-the-park in the top of the first. Richards singled in Hatton in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at one. Barratt's blew the tie wide open in the second when it scored six runs. It widened its lead to 8-1 in the third, which saw a rally by Batters. They scored three runs on singles by Russ Hones, Steve Davenport and Les Clawson. Barratt's shut down the rally, but did not score until the sixth when Brems stole home on a passed ball. In other games Monday, Monarch Doors shut down Storage Enterprises En-terprises 3-1, Peterson's edged the Saints 6-4, Lamoreaux Concrete nipped Organized Parking 5-4, Interstate stopped the Pleasant Grove Merchants 5-3, and the Pleasant Grove Playboys stomped Jack and Jill Bowling Lanes 8-1. During tournament action at the south field Tuesday night, Organized Park nipped Jack and Jill 4-2. Lonnie Gleave twice singled in his son John to create a 2-0 lead for Organized parking. The lead widened to 3-0 when John Newell scored on a passed ball in the third. In the bottom of the inning, though, Jack and Jill's Bryant Bird scored on two throwing errors. Both ballclubs paid dearly for their runs in the sixth. Organized Parking picked up its fourth run on Wayne Snow's sacrifice fly to first, and Jack and Jill's Ron Van Dyke came home on a forced out in the bottom of the inning. Jack and Jill received a strong chance at coming from behind to win in the bottom of the seventh when the team loaded the bases while suffering two outs. The chance was lost, however, when Organized Parking left fielder Bryant Herman tagged Van Dyke's fly. In other Tuesday games, Peterson's edged Barratt's 7-6, the Saints zapped the Merchants 6-2, Storage squeaked past Batters 7-6, Monarch outlasted the Playbys 4-1, and Interstate edged Lamoreaux 11-10. 11-10. Storage's 4-3 win over the Saints at the south field Wednesday night was a thriller from start to finish. Awesome defensive play prevented scoring by either team until the third. Prodded by Ed Barnett's triple to center in the top of the inning, Storage pulled out to a 3-0 lead. It was slashed to one, though when Dave Mortensen singled in two runs in the bottom of the third. A first-base first-base sacrifice by Rotabeck brought in Larsen for the tying run that inning. The game remained tied until the seventh when a walk by Lynn Tolman brought home Phil Merrett to put Storage ahead 4-3. Storage held the Saints to one hit in the bottom of the inning to win. Monarch and Lamoreaux also came out winners Wednesday over Peterson's and Organized Parking. Barratt's came from behind Thursday night to beat Lamoreaux 8-7 on the south field. Barratt's appeared certain of being blasted out of the tournament that evening when their errors in the second allowed Lamoreaux to have a 7-0 lead. Not giving up, though, Barratt's kept chipping away at the lead until the team pulled ahead 8-7 on Brem's two-run homer in the sixth. In other games Thursday, the Playboys blanked Storage 5-0, while in opening round action in the C division, Batters Up destroyed Jack and Jill 11-3 and the Saints overcame over-came the Merchants 5-3. During tournament play Friday night, Monarch and Interstate both had to forfeit their game because of unsportsmanlike conduct and Barratt's clubbed the Playboys 6-3. . Because of scheduling conflicts, Monarch had to pull out of the tourney, giving Interstate the right to play for the B division crown. |
