Show 4-1 I active at training school w Whether it be arts and crafts, cooking, sewing or livestock of some type, 4-H youths at the Utah State Training School enjoy what they are doing. Terry Jensen, Provo, new director of the 4-H program at the school, said about 120 residents are now involved in various projects. She hopes to be able to enlarge the program to 300 residents with the coming of summer and the availability of more volunteers to serve as leaders. "In the summer time, more of our residents are able to take part," Mrs. Jensen said, with many having rabbits, goats or other small animals to raise. They also enjoy the horses at the school and have a horse club. The school utilizes many volunteers in its 4-H program, and, the director says, it's a question as to who gets the most out of the clubs - the kids or the leaders. "The volunteers gain as much from the service as the residents," she said. "They learn to understand the handicapped more and are well repaid by the joy they bring to the handicapped." She said many of the leaders come from BYU, while others are high school students who gain needed credits through service projects. Several senior citizens also donate their time to the organization. Leaders are always needed, however, and anyone wishing to give a few hours each week to the project can call the training school, 756-6022, ext. 212 or 331. Mrs. Jensen, who holds a degree in recreational therapy, said she has been interested in 4-H since she was eight years old and joined a club in her Wyoming hometown. She said she raised a horse and a calf while a member and really enjoyed the experience she received. Her husband, Jim, is a Utah County Youth Agent and is involved in 4-H, so Mrs. Jensen says she has a ready source of information and help.
