Show Review - Thursday, October 27, 1983 - Paire 9 Sophs come from behind to win 19--2 ; 1983 record -8- -0!! scoring pass to VanDyke. The Viking speedster was all alone at the 10 and went into the end zone untouched to put PG on top. Bezzant kicked the point after and the Vikes were leading 7-- 2 with the momentum swinging rapedly to the PG team. Early in the fourth period, an emotionally high Viking defense caused a fumble that Bahr picked up and raced 30 yards for the second PG touchdown. PG iced the game, Region 8 Championship plus an undefeated season when Chad Henry intercepted for the Vikes. Chad Maxfield, PG workhorse, ploughed off tackle for 10 yards and Hooley added eight more. At the 12 yard line, VanDyke broke several tackles after moving through a hugh hole on the right side and scored. Dan Phelon and Josh Bickerton, plus Hooley, gave VanDyke good blocks at the line of scrimmage and Jim Debenham made a good hit on the Lion cornerback. - Travis Carpenter, Mike Turner and Bent Larsen had good defensive games for PG as did Korey Johannson at cornerback. PG scored 246 points to their opponents 58 during the season. PG went into the game with a 7-- record but for nearly three quarters the Vikes were held in check by the visiting Lions. The Vikes started a frustrated first half by taking the kickoff and starting on their own four yard line. Three plays later PG was forced to punt. The snap was bad, the first time this season, and Deon Bezzant had to chase the loose ball in the end zone. Bezzant smartly kicked the bouncing ball out of the back of the end zone for a safety and his quick thinking saved a possible Payson touchdown. The Viking defense was solid but a bit too aggressive. On Payson's first punt a roughing the kicker penalty turned a fourth and 18 situation into a Payson first down. The Lions could not consistently move the ball as both teams continued to struggle on offense. Five minutes into the game, Shawn Jacobsen, starting Viking quarterback was hit as he passed and the ankle injury turned out to be a broken left leg. Kevin Ash came in to handle the quarterbacking chores and after getting his feet wet he did a great job. Just before the first half ended, Darren Hooley broke loose on a 50 yard run that set up a Viking field goal attempt. Scott Beagley's kick was wide and the alert Uons returned the ball to midfield as the half ended with Payson leading 2-- Payson took the second half kickoff and used seven minutes in driving the ball to the Viking nine yard line. With first and goal at that point, the Viking defense stiffened and four plays later, Payson had lost 11 yards and turned the ball over on the 20. Payson refused to budge and the Vikes were forced to punt. Another bad snap caused punter Kyle Peterson to scramble after the ball. Peterson was able to get the kick off just under the outstretched arms of three charging Lions players. Disaster turned into opportunity when the kick was allowed to hit the ground and took a PG bounce to the Payson 28. Two plays later, Kerry VanDyke picked off a Lion pass and the Vikes began to roll. In the hunting party with Darrel opening day of the season, Oct. 15, at 7:20 a.m. It was shot only a short distance from camp.
