Show Halloween Treats J By CAROLYN KURR WARDLE s Trick or treat' The night of ghosts ? and goblins will soon be here, and 5 children will be out trying to scare r up something good to eat Why not hand out homemade treats this v Halloween. Here are a few ideas s that are also ideal for the school or ' church carnival. Gumdrop Bars are a delightfully . gwy bar with fruity bits of candy throughout. An easy way to chop I (he gumdrops is to keep your knife wet This keeps them from sticking. Pastel Popcorn Balls is a new twist on an old favorite. The candy doesn't stick to your teeth, and is nice and chewy. The flavored gelatin also provides an endless choice of flavors. I Gumdrop Bars ul 2 cups all purpose flour j 1 tsp. cinnamon y, tsp. salt 3 eggs 2 cups packed brown sugar 14 cup evaporated milk 1 cup soft gumdrops, cut in small pieces (omit licorice-flavored drops) 'A cup finely chopped pecans Stir together flour, cinnamon, and salt. Beat eggs until light in d color. Slowly beat in brown sugar. Stir in evaporated milk. Add flour 1 mixture a third at a time, beating until smooth after each addition. Stir in gumdrops and pecans. Spread into greased 13x9x2-inch baking pan. Bake in preheated oven 325F for 35 minutes or until lightly browned and bar pulls from sides of pan. Cool. Spread with Creamy Vanilla Frosting and cut into bars. Makes 32 bars. Creamy Vanilla Frosting " Vi cup butter or margarine, softened vj ' cup evaporated milk :; 2 tsp. vanilla i 1 pound powdered sugar (4 cups) .;i Combine butter, evaporated milk ;i and vanilla in IV2 quart mixing bowl. Add powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, mixing until smooth after jj each addition. Mix until frosting is : smooth and shiny. If consistency is too thick, add a few drops of 5 evaporated milk. Pastel Popcorn Balls 'A cup light corn syrup 't cup sugar J 1 3 oz. pkg. flavored gelatin 1 4-5 cups freshly popped popcorn I Combine syrup, sugar, and gelatin in saucepan. Stir over low "eat until sugar and gelatin are thoroughly dissolved, about 5 "unutes. Pour gelatin mixture over PP)rn, mixing well. Moisten bands in cold water and form 2-"ich 2-"ich balls. Wrap each individually Mastic wrap. Makes about 2 dozen popcorn "alls. |
