Show Vikes tame Lions Pleasant Grove exploded for 28 points in the first Quarter and coasted to a 48-8 Region win over a lackluster Payson team last Thursday. The Lions, whose dismal program has been going from had to worse entered the season's final game knowing their head coach, Bob Cook, had been fired during the week. With nothing to lose, Payson'tried an on-side kick to open the game. That trick caught the Vikings by surprise and the Lions recovered in Viking territory. However, four plays later the Viking defense forced Payson to turn the ball over on downs and the spark of hope the on-side kick had generated was quickly snuffed out. On three straight possessions, the Viking offense scored. Eric Thomas passed 24 yards to Scott Mosher and Matt Norman kicked the point after to open the PG scoring floodgates. Moments later, Mark Clements took an option pitch from his tailback spot and ran 10 yards to score. On the next Viking drive, Shaun Story went nine yards to paydirt and after each score Norman kicked the PAT. With the score 21-0, Payson tried a quick pitch to left side and Shane Phillips, Viking defensive end, txk it in stride and raced 48 yards for the fourth PG touchdown. Norman's kick made it 28-0 with time still left in the first period. Before halftime the Vikes added another touchdown with Heath Johnston carrying the ball in from the two yard line for a 155-0 halftime score. Payson scored in the third period when Thomas was tackled in the end zone for a safety.
