Show 'Chemical People' will focus on important issue Drug abuse is something we don't like to talk about much in this area at least not as it relates to us. Because until we are confronted with it in our living rooms, drug abuse, like auto accidents, is something that always happens to the other guy or to the other guys kids. But in an effort to make the nation confront drug abuse in everyone's living room, the Public Broadcasting System will be airing a two-part special program called "The Chemical. People." The first part of the program will be aired on KUED, Channel 7, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. The second will follow the week later, Nov. 9, at the same time. It is being billed as one of the most important outreach efforts in the history of public television. ' "The Chemical People" is designed to prod communities throughout the state to action in the battle against drug and alcohol abuse among the young. Following the broadcasts, town meetings will be set up so our communities can begin organizing permanent task forces to fight drug abuse. First Lady Nancy Reagan will host the program, and will be joined by several well-known celebrities. KUED is planning a third program Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. where viewers can call professionals to find out how they can be become involved in the task force. The two programs, "A Chemical Society" and "Community Answers" have been designed to help members of each community face the fact that drug and alcohol abuse is prevelant and that solving the problem is everyone's responsibility. Meetings are being scheduled in our area. Details on those meetings will be printed in next week's newspaper. Local communities should grab onto this program with the idea of starting something that can help our young people avoid or overcome the drug and alcohol problems now ravaging our schools. It's an excellent starting point and an opportunity that should not be missed. |
