Show j PG Sophs Defeat Payson 38-6 pleasant Grove rolled over Payson 38 in sophomore football play Thursday. It took just three minutes before the sophomore "flea-flicker" worked to perfection with Jesse Walker handling han-dling an Eric Thomas pitch,- rolled right and fired a 40 yard scoring pass to Robert Jolley. The PG tight end was at least 10 yards behind the nearest Payson defender, so alone in fact that he must have thought everyone had gone home early to watch BYU play Nevada. After kicking the first two extra points in their first game, PG began a stretch of four straight misses that had the coaching staff shaking their heads. Payson failed to move the ball, something they were unable to do until late in the game, and the Vikes struck quickly after the Lion punt. Mark Clements got outside on an option and raced to the 11 yard line. ' Clements carried again to the 6 inch line and on the third straight run he crashed over right tackle to score. After the quarter change and with a 12-0 lead, the Vikes took to the air with Thomas passing 65 yards to Scott Mosher for the third Viking touchdown. touch-down. Mosher caught the ball over the middle, cut left and out ran the green clad pursuers to the goaline to put the Vikes ahead at the half, 18-0. ? 1 Walker, who had thrown 'the touchdown pass to Jolley in the first period, was on the receiving end of a 30 yard Thomas pass for PG's fourth score early in the third period. Tracy Flinders, a starter on defense and the Viking backup quarterback, took over the signal calling chores and early in the fourth period directed PG to its' fifth touchdown. Following good runs by Todd Hansen and Nate Wright, Flinders took the pigskin across the goaline from a yard out. With PG liberally substituting, Payson put together a drive that resulted in a score, but only after three tries from the four yard line. Mike Walden returned the kick-off and then Flinders directed the Vikes 55 yards to pay dirt. Deon Giles caught a 40 yard pass and then Eric Kieffer took an option pitch and tightroped down the far sidline before getting knocked out of bounds at the pylon for the games final touchdown. Flinders sneaked in for the two point play to raise the total to 38-6. Defensively Shaun Nuttal, a 190 pound tackle, played his best game. Defensive backs, Waker, Jolley and Flinders each picked off Payson passes in the PG secondary. Jeff Hamner played another outstanding out-standing game at offensive center, going for three quarters without a missed snap. Guards Don Parker and Mike Sumner demonstrated improvement in carrying out blocking assignments along the offensive line. |
