Show Lindon School Holds Fair and Back-to-School Night It was a potpourri of handmade crafts, goodies, pictures, and vegetable sculpture that greeted parents on Wednesday night, Sept. 1 as they gathered at the school to meet the PTA board and this year's teachers and staff. Some of the hundreds of interesting items made or brought by the children for the annual fair included a pair of E.T. Jeans, a Pac-Man cake, a rock collection, potato men, and a wooden Aztec drum. New PTA President Karen VanOrden introduced the PTA Board and presented that organization's plans for the "coming school year? The theme for this year is "We Care." Through the months they will emphasize em-phasize different aspects of the theme. For September it will be "We Care About Our School . " During September the board will be pushing for membership. Mrs. Chynoweth, membership chairman, informed the parents that they have to be members of the PTA in order to vote on any issue that comes up in the school. The cost is $1.50. Rather than having class competition com-petition in the membership drive this year, the whole shcool will be going out together for the "Early Bird" award. A poster will be put up in the hall to see how the school is coming on the drive. The PTA plans to sponsor a Citizen of the Month for the first time this year. They will be looking for qualities such as kindness and caring in the children and urged the parents to help their children to be kind and thoughtful at home so that it would be reflected at school. Principal Eugene Maag introduced the teachers to the parents and then spoke a few minutes on the school's goals for the year. They are concentrating con-centrating on a "Quality through Unity" program this year. Maag stressed the parents involvement in it. He explained that it is a team approach to the education of the children where both parents and teachers are members of the team. "We want to assist you in the education of your child," he said. - Within the curriculum they will be emphasizing a good phonics-based program, something that has been strongly requested by parents. Joseph Asbury will be the teacher representative to the PTA during the 1982-83 school year. , The principal infOftned the parents 'at 'the " 'meeting the" new" laws" relating to students. He said next year the cut-off date for being able to attend at-tend Kindergarten fall of 1983 will be moved up to September 1; this year anyone having their fifth birthday prior to September 30 is eligible to attend. Last, Maag discussed the student check-out system being implemented. Any parent wishing to take their child out of school during the day must come personally to the school and sign them out on a log before they will be permitted to leave. Brian Shoell has joined the school staff as the new custodian. The PTA is planning a Mother's Tea on Sept. 16 at 3:45 p.m. at the school. The room mothers will be introduced to the teachers then. Other events planned for September Sep-tember include a field trip to Clear Creek Sept. 15-17 for the 5th graders, a Timp hike by the 3rd grade on the 16th and a trip to Hogle Zoo by the 1st graders on the 13th. |
