Show S pmt Vikes Shut-out Payson 1 ill - i. . . ' ' .. , ' K- . . ' : i1 tlL" f Pleasant Grove took advantage of i big first and fourth quarters offensively of-fensively plus a solid four period j defense to shut out Payson, 28-0 Friday. i The Vikes scored 13 points early and added 15 in the final period to post their first win in the young 1982 season. Senior Quarterback Clark Hill ran for PG's first score, a 13 yard keeper play off the left side that capped a 58 yard first period drive. Hill booted the point after out of Darren Framptons hold. Payson was unable to generate any offensive consistency, although Bob ' Armstrong made several nice runs. ! The 190 pound Lion fullback ran well ! off the tackle holes, but when Payson ' got to PG's 20 yard line, that was where the Vikes shut the door. Rick Worthen, Payson's junior quarterback, was accurate with the short pass but PG refused to give up the long bomb. In fact, Scott Walker and Craig Hilton picked off three Worthen passes. One of Hiltons interceptions in-terceptions on the six yard line, thwarted th-warted Payson's deepest drive. Leo Biggs, Brent McAllister, Mark Harvey and Mickay Robinson were some of the brightest stars in a star studded defensive effort that kept pressure on Worthen all afternoon. That pressure in three interceptions. Demonstrating a fine running game, PG marched to the three yard line early in the second period. Curt Harrison, PG's 190 pound power runner, kept Payson inside concious while speedster, Jason Allred, worked the corners. When Payson keyed on those two, Hill ket the ball in Coach Doug Bluth's option oriented attack, turning upfield for several good gains. From the three, Hill kept the ball and scored at the pylon. The point after kick failed. Neither team could score in the third period but just minutes apart in the fourth, Hill connected for a pair of long touchdown passes that iced the game for PG. Following an interception, the Vikes went long and Tim Chambers, running a deep post pattern, caught Hill's pass at the 15 and raced in for the score. A pass interference foul on the two point pass attempt gave the Vikes another chance from the one and one half yard line. Harrison bruised over left guard into the end zone raising the score to 21-0. On Payson's next drive, a Lion runner was jarred by a terrific tackle and the ball came loose with Walker scopping it up on one bounce. Walker was on his way to a sure six when the inadvertent whistle soun ded, killing the play. The PG coaches didn't have to get after the guilty official because the referee, Gary Beers took care of that. The Vikes held and on the next possession, Hilton made a finger-tip catch of a Hill pass and raced down the grandstand sideline, 53 yards for the final score. The p.a.t. kick made it 28-0 for the Vikes. Hiltons catch, one of six during the game, gave him a "catch all day".' The senior receiver caught every pass thrown to him. Viking Coach Bluth felt very good about PG's passing attack. "We threw the ball very well today", he said. Hill completed 11 of 15 for 191 yards with one interception. The Vikes rolled up another 300 yard game with a tot al of 315 yards to Paysons 209. Last week in St. George, the Vikes were plagued with fumbles but on more farnilar turf, PG lost only one and that came late in the game when sophomore Eric Thomas, getting his first play in a varsity game, couldn't connect with the center snap.
