An effective defense, led by guard Wayne Whitely, who had numerous steals during the game, was a key factor in the win. The Vikes failed to generate any real effec-tive offense but out hustled the Payson team to keep the score tight. With 25 seconds to play, P.G. tied the score at 46 all and with 10 seconds remaining, for-ces Payson to turn the ball over. After a time out, Kim Walker passed to Todd Kitchen who fed the ball to Ash for the final shot. The Vikes take on Judge Memorial Satur-day night in the Viking gym at 7:30, J.V. 5:30. by Guy Madsen Pleasant Grove held off a fourth quarter Payson surge and took a 58-5- victory to win their region opener. David Ratliff, P.G.'s running guard, led the way as he scored 18 fir-st half points but had to ride the bench the second half with four fouls. The Vikes had a big lead all the way through the game but were almost shut out the last quarter as the Lions started to make all their shots fall and the Vikings were almost in check. Ratliff, Hansen, and Atwood led the scoring surge the first half with Craig Giles also adding scores for the Vikes. Hansen and Ratliff sat the bench nursing four fouls each but Giles and reserve guard Russ Johnson kept up the scoring trend with fine drives and nice 15 footers. Defense again was a big park in the win as the Viking "D" kept the Lions on the short end of the score throughout the game, except in the fourth quarter when the Lions started to hit everything. After two missed shots with 30 seconds left in the game, Kim Walker came up with a key rebound and fed Johnson for a lay in that iced the game for the Vikes. Ratliff led all scorers as he had 20 points for the game with Giles adding 11 and Hansen 10. The Vikes took on the tough Provo Bulldogs Wed. He had 12 points and 17 rebounds. P.G. played a good defense to hold Payson to 39 points. All of the players got to play in the game. Most of them added points to the win. This was the Sophomores first game. Final score was P.G. 59, Payson 39. Roundabout Race Results There were only 2 trucks entered in each of the three quarter ton classes this week. They were all big, fast, and beautiful. Larry Webb and his big Black Dodge proved too much for Gene drive line during a practice run so he raced in 2 wheel drive in the Jeep class. Randy Warenski's 6 cylinder Toyota walked away with the win. It proved that the 4 wheel really makes a difference. line first for the win and the trophy. It was really a fun race to watch. There will not be any races now until January 6th allowing a break for the holidays. McGee's beautiful Blue Ford. With only 2 tries Larry took home a trophy. First time proved lucky for Gary Humes in the 34 ton Modified class. It took 3 tries for him to beat out our old Pro Rob Andreason, but when he put the pedal he was gone. There were enough trucks to have a 2 wheel class this week and the performance brought some surprises. Allen Strasburg, Kriss Sweat, Scott Hubbard, and Wayne Hansen were all joking about themselves and their trucks abilities in the pits. But when they got on the strip it was all business. Allen Strasburgs Ford and Scott Hubbards 52 Chev. were pretty well matched, so much in fact, that first one then the other won a heat. The bets were on as to the outcome, as they lined up once again on the starting line. Scott was first off the starting line and he held the lead all the way to take the win and trophy. Allen was right behind him. The finals in the 12 ton Modified class were down to Darrell Frampton in Old Yeller, to Kent Gurney in his beautiful Dodge. Both experienced drivers. It took 3 tries for Kent to beat out Darrell, but win he did. Mike Strasburgs' Bronco broke the front Mike Nagle punched the pedal and left Scott Sunderland behind for the 1st heat in the Dune Buggy Class but Scott was ready for him on the second try. When the green light came on he was off like a bat. The third try proved the same as the second, so Scott took home the trophy. When the Top Eliminator Class got down to the finals Kent Gurney and his Dodge W were up against Scott I Sunderland and his V.W. powered Buggy. Experience told Kent when and how hard to put the pedal down and thats just what he did. When the green light flashed he was gone, to take two out of two heats to win the trophy. There was much speculation during the Powder Puff this week. 16 year old Shalane Gurney was up against her mother Carolyn, during the final heats. She surprised a lot of people. The first trip down the strip was Carolyns, with room to spare. But by the second heat Shalane had figured out what makes Darrell Framp-ton- s 73 Chevy tick. So when Carolyn punched the pedal in Kents big, fast Dodge, Shalane was a little faster. When the 3rd heat came along both girls were primed and ready. Luck was with Shalane this week as she crossed the Jayvee Wrestling Squad Wins 63-- 0 BY David Lundell Pleasant Grove's Jayvee wrestling squad had a "hey-day- " against Dixie last Thursday, in posting a 63-- 0 shutout. Mike Van Wave, Ray Bennett, Errol Sherod, and Jim Moore had pins. So far this year the Jayvee squad looks like it is going to keep well up with the var-sity in wins.
