David Ratliff led the Vikes the first night with 16 points and Kevin Peay added 13 to the cause as the Vikes played very well. Defense was a big part of the contest as the Viking defense shut off Lehi's inside game and forces them to take the long outside shot. Strasburg Wins Drags over Mike Nagle's Dune Buggy. The Drag racers were out in full force Satur-day at the Roundabout strirj. The number more than doubling the first week. Lindsay Strasburg is still undefeated in the Pleasure Class, which includes Blazers, Bron-cos, RamCharger, etc. His fast moving Bronco really does go. Wallace Brereton in his Renegade and Mike Nagle in his Jeep raced each other for sport. Being the only ones to show up in their classes, they won a trophy each, the easy way. When it got "down to the wire" it was Truman Lyon's Chev against Bob Ford. Truman came out the winner in the 34 ton class. There were six 12 tons in the Stock class and one was driven by a girl (person). Charlotte Fillmore made it clear up to the finals when Don Newman in his '74 Chev beat her out. It was Dodge against Dodge in the 12 Ton Modified Class. Cindy Peterson and Kent Gurney were really trying hard. When Kent put the pedal down there was no cat-ching him. He won 2 out of three heats for the win. When the Powder Puff got down to the finals, it was Charlotte Fillmore's Ford against Sheryl Strasburg's (Lindsay's) Bronco, the race was something to watch as the gals were really trying. It proved Charlotte's lucky day as she took the win and trophy. Ted Atenco's truck with the previous owner behind the wheel (Rob Andreason) proved unbeatable in the Top Eliminator Class as it took the win Browbeating Kids? Another tactic of young people is name-callin- It usually points out some feature of the target child that the kid would just as soon forget. Thus, the little stutterer become known as "Porky Pig;" the nearsighted kid is "Hawkeye;" and the child who wears braces is "Tin Grin." No doubt about it: Every child will take some cuts in life. But the worst ones can come from those we love, the family. You don't need to let it happen. Deal in positive ways with your children. Look for ways to compliment, not cut. Do it, and your children will feel better about themselves and perform better in school and in life. by Dr. Daryl J. Mc- Carthy A lot of child abuse tragedies arise from parents beating their children, but they can be injured just as seriously by words as by fists or whips. Browbeating kids can be as painful as beating them. The dictionary says browbeating means intimidating or domineering. Many adults ac-complish this with sharp words that cut deeply. Sometimes, its cut words. Particularly painful and destructive to a child's self image are words such as "stupid," dumb, lazy, ugly, runt, fatso, etc." Besides words, there are sterotyped statements that un-thinking parents sometimes use, such as: "You'll never amount to anything." "Why can't you be like Ruth? She's always getting a straight A report card?" "You blockhead, you're never going to hold a job more than a week." It isn't just parents and other adults who browbeat kids. Children get this rough treat-ment from each other, too. Breathes there a person who hasn't seen some unlucky kid crying in the schoolyard while classmates hoot some sing song line over and over about the kids dress, race, physical defect, economic condition or manner of speech? That kind of treat-ment can put abrasions on a youngster's ego that hurt as much as a blow to the head with a And the damage is just as permanent. NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING The City Council will meet in public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19, 1978 in the city hall for the purpose of review ing with interested citizens the vacating of 300 south street bet-ween 1300 East and the 7th, 8th, and 13th LDS chapel parking lot. The condition of the vacant of this street would be that the LDS church would accept this property and improve it with asphalt and provide access to the parking lot through this area. All interested citizens are invited to attend this meeting and ex-press their opinions on this matter. Mark H.
