Thanksgiving trips, slippery highways and poor visibility add up to a triple threat to motorists, according to Bob Ingersoll, Managing Director of the Utah Safety Counci. "It is unfortunate - and often tragic-- - that our first winter storms in Utah often hit during the long Thanksgiving holiday, when neither cars nor drivers are prepared," the safety official warned. He urged motorists to get their cars ready for winter driving as a first step before planning a Thanksgiving trip. "Half the battle is won when your car is in first class mechanical condition, especially those items that directly affect traction and visibility, such as brakes, tires, lights, defroster and windshield wipers. When pavements are slippery, good tires with good treads are a must. Snow tires are helpful for pulling through snow and studded tires (where legal) are still better for added traction on icy pavements. For severe snow and ice conditions, however, rein-forced tire chains are far more effective. Carry them in your trunk in case you encounter deep snow or glare ice, Ingersoll advised. To be prepared for the other added hazards associated with winter driving - poor visibility - Ingersoll urged , drivers to clear snow and ice I from all windows, including . the side and rear windows as well as the windshield. "Good n visibility to the side and rear 3 is also essential in today's heavy traffic," he said. "Replace streaking wind-shield wipers and be sure the windshield washers have an adequate supply of anti-freez- e solution." Finally, he urged motorists to get themselves ready before First Game Season Opens for Roundball Friday by Jack Hill It's "roundball" time again.Tomorrow the Vikes host Region V power, Judge Memorial in the seasons first game. Coach Keith Allred is cautiously optomistic about the season. With several returning lettermen from last years team, he is looking foward to a good year. Ray Walker, 6 foot 7 inch senior center, gives P.G. a genuine "big" man. Walker may be the tallest player in Region Six. Coach Allred hasn't decided on a starting five . yet, but he said as of right now, "three players, Bret Jenkins, Tom Strasburg and Layne Butt will see plenty of action as fowards." Allred added, "Butt will also play guard with Gary Jackson and Bret Frampton." Other seniors who have looked good in early practice sessions include Kirk Tanner, Brent Keetch and Kyle Secretan. Games start tomorrow with Coach Alan Bahr's J.V. at 5:45 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30.
