Show Businessmen Meet for Discussion, Planning Pleasant Grove businessmen met for a discussion and planning session on the proposed downtown improvement. im-provement. Since the last meeting the people involved had been able to give some thought as to what they want for the business area. Jack West of the Planning Commission gave some thoughts in regards to consistent con-sistent planning. Materials for construction, parking and environmental impact must all be considered. We would want the town to develop harmoniously, har-moniously, Mr. West said. Much concern for the basic protection of buildings on Main Street was stressed by Roy Thorne, property owner. Planter boxes and trees to beautify as well as act as barriers are foremost in the plan. The businessmen are taking a hard look at the town and hoping to influence the consumer con-sumer to remain in the city to do business. Gerald Belliston of Christensen's noted that the town is built on solid businesses. Through the years these business people have put money back into their operation. The downtown business is convenient and they try to maintain a personal relationship with the customer. Several of the townspeople commented that they enjoy shopping in town and like the atmosphere of friendliness. Mark Bezzant said that the enthusiasm for planning a new main street had even caught hold in the local schools. Mr. McAbbe's class, of the Valley View Elementary School has been working up their own plans of what the Main Street should look like. This display along with the concept from the BYU will be on display at the Bank of Pleasant Grove and the Wasatch Bank, Townspeople should be aware that the displays are only ideas of how the area could be built. It is surely not intended in-tended to force businessmen to conform but to work towards a master plan in the future. Most of the people agreed that they would like some kind Improvements (Continued from page 1) of architectural control. It was also suggested that we take a look at the city as a whole for improvements rather than just the Main Street. Proposed improvements at this time were based on the Main Street to State Street and State to 1st East on Center Street. Many of the area residents were concerned with the overall appearance of the town. Pride was the key word to improvement. Pleasant Grove needs a park. The word Grove signifies a grassy shaded area with trees where children and parents alike might enjoy themselves. The meeting concluded with a committee being formed. Gary Hendry, owner of the Ideal Market will head the committee and they will hold a meeting on the second of October Oc-tober to correlate their plans. |
