Show Thanksgiving Is Harvest Season A season of thanksgiving is here traditionally the close of the harvest when crops have been gathered into the storehouse and there is food enough for the months when no food is grown WE HAVE removed ourselves s from the basics in our specialized civilization Children grow to maturity without experiencing the cycle of preparing the ground planting tending harvesting and preserving the food which will sustain them through the winter Milk l comes in bottles eggs in cartons and meat in plastic wrapped Tapped packages Bread was never wheat cheese was was ne never er milk orange juice never hung on a tree in 3 a a ripening globe and a hamburger patty never grazed i y a green meadow t i 1 IN TIlE THE minds of our young the supermarket is the i ti source There is a danger in this concept of an automatic i k v source of all aU good things When a people withdraw themselves from their foundations the possibility of F foundation rot increases f AS WITH our food sources so o with the economy and 1 f 1 with the government People have become insulated by byr r r the very complexity of our society to the point where v they do not understand the sources of the ease they r t enjoy All food begins with growing vegetation which must be tended and toiled over All AU laws begin in the minds f i of men and the enforcement of the law is finally accomplished accomplished accomplished ac- ac by men C GOVERNMENT GOVERN IN this free land is still by consent of the governed but consent may be assumed by default default de de- fault fawl if the people fail to make their wishes known The social climate of a city or a neighborhood doesn't J just happen it is the result of the acts of people and Y the attitudes of people r PEOPLE MOVED from the center of the city and by this act began the process of decay of the heart of the city which is one of our major problems In countries where land is dear people dont don't move to newer neighborhoods neighborhoods neighborhoods neighbor- neighbor hoods in the suburbs they live in their houses for generations generations gen- gen care for them and take pride in the age of their homes They continue in their neighborhoods and must therefore remain a part of what they have cre cre- There is no real escape however even in our spacious q land We may move from the farm and allow our children children children chil chil- dren to grow up without knowing where food comes y from but such a generation will not share their parents parents' parents par- par thanksgiving for the harvest r WE MAY pull our skirts away ay from the gri grime e of the political arena but we must then live with the kind of government we get from those who are willing to become become become be be- come involved J We may move to the suburbs but we must then t deal with the problems of rot of city centers WE MA MAY Y go home at night draw the drapes and lock the door and sit at our ease aloof from the k kind nd of neighborhood developing around us but then our children must grow up in and become part of that neighborhood AT THIS TillS Thanksgiving season perhaps the best gratitude gratitude gratitude tude might be that there is still time to re-plant re our roots in the soil from whence comes our sustenance and reach out those roots to help support the foundations upon which our free land rests We We with to ded- ded might begin our thanksgiving a pledge ti at least a portion of our time to strengthening the neighborhood and the community and the nation by willing- willing j j 1 ness to become involved with our fellow men p |
