Show tj )V Itand.v llanskiil Tigers eat 'em! But when the blast of war blows in our ears, then imitate the action of the tiger..." Since the World Series is the closest thing to war in the world of baseball, the San Diego Padres would' ve been smart to heed those words of William Shakespeare in Henry III. But they didn't, and were chewed up in five easy games. Sure I could gloat that I predicted the Tigers would win it in five, but I won't. After all, I picked Chet Lemon to be MVP! The way Whitaker and Trammell opened each game, scoring or batting in runs, there was no question that Trammell was the MVP. He has created a new word in Detroit relating to the beating given the opposition. They were "trammelled." The most exciting play of the Series: That came in either Game One or Two, I can't be sure which. It was when Kurt Bevacqua was thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple. The relay from Whitaker was dead on, and Bevacqua was dead out. It was fun to watch the third base coach for the Padres trying to get down as low as possible, as if he were projecting himself into Bevacqua's position, hoping he could somehow slide under Darrel Evans' glove. Dullest game: That is a tossup between Game Two or Three. Both were carbon copies where Detroit jumped out to an early lead, and sat on it through the remainder of the game. One thing must be said about those early leads, though. I've never seen a team start out as quickly as the Tigers. In every game those who turned in late were sorry, as they found they had missed a lot of offensive action in the Tigers' first at-bat. Enough said about the Tigers it's just great to see the World Championship return to Detroit. It seems such a long time ago when my friends and I went down to Val's Pizza in Plymouth, Michigan to get an autograph from Mickey Lolich, the famed Tiger pitcher who won three games in the 1968 World Series. Lolich was making the promotional stops around the Detroit area during the winter after that Series. Surely the kids of Detroit will eagerly anticipate the chance to get an autograph from the likes of Parish, Trammell, Gibson, and the rest of them this coming winter! |
