Unless otherwise noted, events listed below will take place in Salt Lake MOVIES Japanese Week, Oct. 14-20, dominates the action. (You can also find it in our other departments.) The Utah Media Center, 20 South West Temple, is hosting "Focus on Japan: A Conference on Japanese Cinema," Oct. 18-20. There will be seven films, including Kurosawa's version of MacBeth, "Throne of Blood," as well as lectures, symposia and panel discussions. For further information, contact the Media Center at 534-1158. Meanwhile, the Kurosawa festival continues at the Salt Lake City Library, 209 E. 500 S. The Oct. 18 film, "Ikuru," is about a minor bureaucrat, dying of cancer, who seeks meaning in his life. It plays at 7 p.m., with tickets at $2.50. The library also continues its ghost festival for Halloween with one of the most famous ghost stones. Based on the Henry James story, "The Innocents" asks whether there really are ghosts haunting a pair of young Victorian children, or are they the product of a neurotic, troubled governess (Deborah Kerr)? Michael Redgrave plays the children's father. The Oct. 19 film plays at 2 p.m. (for 25 cents) and 7 p.m. (lor 50 cents). At the Blue Mouse: "Liquid Sky" is a mixture of punk rock, black humor and science fiction: "El Norte" is a haunting, if not completely satisfying, tale of a brother and sister trekking from Central America to Los Angeles; James Dean is stunning in his first (maybe best) star performance in "East of Eden"; and "Backstage at the Kirov" follows the Leningrad company through part of "Swan Lake." The Mouse is at 260 East 100 South. MUSIC Country star Ricky Skaggs appears at Symphony Hall on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. Tickets, for $12 and $10, are available at the Capitol Theatre Box Office and Datatix outlets. The Utah Svnrohonv offers a program of Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner with piano soloist Malcolm Frager. The program plays on Oct. 18 at the Browning Center, Weber State College and Oct. 19-20 at Salt Lake's Symphony Hall. All programs are at 8 p.m. Pat Metheny is coming for a concert at Kingsbury Hall on Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. Reserved tickets at $12.50 are available at Cosmic Aeroplane, Smokey's Records, Capitol Theatre, Datatix outlets and Kingsbury Hall. It is presented by Scott Arnold and B-101 FM. THEATRE Children of the night will stalk the Egyptian Theatre stage at Park City Performances' "Dracula." The Salt Lake Acting Company helps celebrate Japanese Week with "Pacific Overtures," where East meets West and Kabuki style mixes with Sondheim songs. It plays Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. (gala opening on Friday, Oct. 19) through Nov. 25. A Nov. 3 matinee is at 2 p.m. The theatre is at 168 West Fifth North. Beth Henley's "Crimes of the Heart" deals with the crises of the three McGrath Sisters. Presented by Walk-Ons at Theatre 138 (138 South Second East), it plays Thursday-Saturday through Vov. 10 at 8 p.m. "Charly" plays on Oct. 20 and 22 (7:30 p.m.) at Highland High School 2166 South Seventeenth East. "Mr. Roberts" has scheduled two preview nights on Oct. 23 and 24 at7:30 p.m.. at the Promised Valley Playhouse, 132 South State. ETCETERA The Kimball Art Center in Park City presents paintings by , Paul Davis in the Main Gallery and works by Kent Price in the Lower Gallery. The exhibits run through Nov. 1. "Once Upon a Starry Night" at Hansen Planetarium, 15 South State, plays weekdays (11 a.m., 2, 4:30 and 7 p.m.), Saturdays (2, 4:30 and 7) and Sundays (2 and 4:30). The children's show "Zoom a Little Zoom" plays at Hansen at 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by "Science Sorcery" at 11:45 a.m. "Grace Under Pressure," a laser-light presentation of Rush's newest album, plays Thursday at 8:30 p.m. and Friday-Saturday at 9:45 and 11 p.m. General admission is $4, with $3 for children under 12senior citizens. Laserium also presents Pink Floyd in "Dark Side of the Moon." It plays Friday (8:30) Saturday (3 and 8:30) and Sunday (3 p.m.). As part of Japanese Week, "Mingei of Japan," an exhibit of everyday Japanese art, is on display at the Salt Lake Art Center, 20 South West Temple. The exhibit will continue through mid-November. Is Hulk Hogan more popular than Scott Matheson? The Hulkster again stars in "Superstars of Wrestling" Oct. 18 at the Special Events Center. "Haunt-a-Taunt" provides mild creeps at the Triad Center North Plaza Terrace. Join Count Dracula and Morticia from 3:30 to 9 p.m. every day except Sunday through Oct. 30. Tickets are $2. |
