The Park City Ski Area will not only host a men s slalom World Cup race next March, but also a women's slalom World Cup race. "I spoke to Harald Schoenhaar I (alpine director for the United States Ski Team ) this week and he confirmed that the F.I S. (International (Inter-national Federation of Skiing) has added these races in Park City to the 1985 schedule," said John Dakin, information director for the ski team. Dakin said the women's race is slated for March 19 and the men's race for March 20. "The U.S. Ski Team spends 95 percent of the season skiing in everyone else's back yard It will be nice for a change to have a World Cup race in the team's back yard, so to speak." He said the racs would be an exciting addition to the winter schedule of the town. "Traditionally Park City has been very supportive of the ski team; that was exhibited at the Nor Am races last spring and the past several years with the Celebrity Classic and the Ski Team Salute This will give the community something more back, an event w here the team actually competes here." For the Park City Ski Area, being awarded the bid for the two races is the culmination of a long process. "We've worked closely with the United States Ski Team, with Bill Marolt when he was there and with Harald Scnoennaar to bring World Cup ski racing to Utah." said Craig Badami. vice president of the ski area. "In addition we have worked with Subaru, downtown Salt. Lake hotels and Snowbird Ski Area on a bid that would include both slalom and giant slalom races for men and women in 1986 at both Park City and Snowbird Ski Areas. "To have received the recogni tion ol the F I S in a 1985 bid which was delivered after the original World Cup schedule was released was a great honor." Badami said. "Having these races here fits into the Park City Ski Area's long range international marketing plans And we're most excited to have the best skiers in the world on our mountain." |
