Show Doc's, Jan's, Coconuts fight for first place honors In the Men's Softball League last week, Doc's knocked off the Coconuts to capture a share of first place. Jan's Mountain Outfitters Out-fitters was helped into a first-place tie by the Coconut defeat. All three teams have one loss. In other action, the once sorry Janeaux's exploded for 19 runs to defeat a fading Scrooge's team July 20, but later in the week the Cinderella Janeaux's went back to sleep and forfeited to Doc's. In Women's Softball, a mean Sneakers team held the monstrous Just Arnie's in a headlock hold for 4Vi innings Sunday before Arnie's broke away for victory. Arnie's now owns first place and the Sneakers have a virtual stranglehold on second. Men's Softball Janeaux's 19, Scrooge's 9 The all-new Janeaux's team ripped Scrooge's apart in the early game Wednesday, Wednes-day, July 20, by the almost unbelievable score of 19-9. Is this Janeaux's? Janeaux's got started ear ly Wednesday, and with a little help from a base on balls and some Scrooge's errors, jumped off to a 4-0 first inning lead. Scrooge's couldn't settle down on defense and it seemed as though anything off the bats of Janeaux's was bound to produce. At the end of 5 it was 19-7. Seventh inning homeruns by Tom Doering and Bill Ressi for Scrooge's weren't nearly enough, and Janeaux's Jan-eaux's went home to a victory dinner of chicken livers and water chestnuts wrapped in bacon. Doc's Club 13, Park Hotel Coconuts 7 In the showdown at City Park, Doc's gunned down the Coconuts 13-7 to regain their honor and a share of first place. Doc's, the Nuts, and Jan's Mountain Outfitters now share first place with 9 and 1 records. Doc's scrambled for an early lead. Jessie Schaub spanked a second inning double and Doc's went up 5-zip. The Nuts couldn't find the handles against a steady Doc's defense, and even a fourth inning Jeff Richards homer couldn't get 'em back in that familiar roll-and-kill groove. Doc's spun the Nuts for 4 in the sixth on two baggers by Razor Sharp and Fred Lappe, and the gunfight behind Park Ave. was over. But as Yogi Berra used to say: The season ain't over 'till it's over. Jan's Mountain Outfitters 20, Scrooge's 4 In a mercy killing Sunday, Jan's Mountain Men erased the almost forgotten Scrooge's, 20-4, in five innings. in-nings. The Mountain Men went to work in their usual way by completely disemboweling the opposition in the first inning. From there... well, it wasn't a pretty sight and this reporter will spare the reader the agony of reading about the endless hitting, the endless running and the pain and humiliation that ended when some benevolent soul threw out a white flag. Prospector Square 18, Alamo Bums 2 Prospector Square undid the Alamo Bums and their winning streak Sunday by moDDing the floor with them, warm. Stein's was never in the game and only held on in some sort of masochistic pride. When the game was finally over, the Bums had tallied 23, with Stein's turning turn-ing 9. Women's Softball The Club 9, Prospector Sirloin 10 In a battle for the cellar, Prospector Sirloin turned back the scrappy Club to send them home with their record intact at 0 and 8, while the Sirloin floated to a 2 and 6 record. The Club's extra inning defeat virtually ices their relentless hold on last place. For a while it looked as though the Sirloin would simply blow the Club off the diamond. It ripped them for four runs in the fourth on a three-bagger by Susan Shultz. But the Club battled back in the 5th and 6th innings on the bats of Tamala Milam and Starla Durbin. After 7 innings the score stood at 9 apiece. The Sirloin defense held in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning Annie Richards got on and Lea McDill knocked her around 18- 2. On four Bum errors and a base on balls, the Square took a 6-0 first inning lead. The Bums, who didn't seem to be in any mood to play so early in the day, folded right then and there. The Square, however, wasn't done beating beat-ing up the Alamo and they kept the Bums on the field for what seemed to be all day long. Janeaux's forfeits to Doc's Club on Sunday End Run 19, Stein's 13 In a slugfest in the lower division, the End Run outran a winless Stein's Lodge, 19- 13. In the fifth inning, the End Run blew things wide open on some balanced hitting and two walks on weak pitching by Stein's to go up 17-11. Stein's beat a hasty retreat. The End Run goes to 2 and 8 for the season. to stave off defeat at the hands of the cellar dwellers. Sneakers 4, Just Arnie's 9 For one moment Sunday, or was it 4'2 innings, time stood still as the Sneakers held the murderous Just Arnie's at bay. If the Sneaks could knock off the mean Arnie's squad they could have a share of first place at 7 and 1 for the season. But noooo In the bottom of the fifth inning Arnie's, like a slumbering slum-bering giant, rolled over for five runs to douse the Sneak's 3-1 lead. Arnie's took three more runs in the sixth, and with them the hopes and dreams of the Sneakers. Arnie's owns first place at 8 and 0 on the season. But the Sneakers, who won't hang their heads, have a firm grasp on second, in fact there is no one in sight of their 6 and 2 record. Just Arnie's 17, The Club 10 Park Meadows 23, Snow Pigs 21 In a heavy hitting thriller Sunday, the Country Club finally outlasted a battling Snow Pigs team. It was almost tit for tat in the slugfest that was anything any-thing but a defensive battle. Finally Park Meadows put together a superlative seventh inning of five runs on help from four walks. The clutch hitting of Pat Brennan and Scott Marshall was too much for a late drive by the Snow Pigs, who seem to want out of the second division. Coconuts 8, Hat Store 2 The Park Hotel Coconuts, trying to remember that they still hold a share of first place, beat back the terminal termi-nal Hat Store, 8-2, in a Sunday snoozer. The Nuts came out for three runs in the first inning on some heavy slugging from the power in their order, with clean-up hitter Mark rapping a homer. From there it was downhill in more ways than one. The A rejuvenated Club went head-to-head with Just Arnie's Monday night and made them play Softball. Somewhere along the line Arnie's remembered their reputation for crushing opponents op-ponents and knocked The Club over, 17-10. In the Club's second inning, in-ning, Cindy Couture and Stephanie Spencer spanked base hits for RBIs, and with a little help from three bases on balls courtesy of Janet Peretti, the score was 4-zip for the Club. Then Arnie's came to bat. Solid singles rang out through the lineup. At the end of two innings it was 5-4 Arnie's. Once rolling, Arnie's Ar-nie's has never been stopped, especially against the last place team. The Club had stayed with them for 4',2 innings but Bernadette Ott slammed a fifth inning homer to signal the beginning begin-ning of the end for The Club, 17-10. Thrillseekers vs Prospector Sirloin rained out Nuts stay in a three-way tie for first. The Alamo Bums 23, Stein's Lodge 9 In Tuesday action, the Alamo Bums, in one of their "amazing" moods, tore apart the Stein's squad in a manner that might be interpreted in-terpreted as a case of mistaken identity. The only contest on a cold Tuesday night was to stay |
