City otnerwis noted, events listed below will take place in Salt Lake DANCE ' r"salt Licks," an evening of modern, jazz and tap dance and ballet will be presented at the Salt Lake Art Center (20 South West Temple) on Friday, May 24, at 8 p.m. MOVIES -"North by Northwest," presented at the Salt Lake City Library on May 24, may be the finest spy romp of them all. A trivial case of mistaken identity plunges Cary Grant into a cross-country chase (pursued by spy James Mason), a romance with susniHniis Kva Marif 19- Saint, an encounter with a homocidal crop-dusting plane and a thrilling climax on Mount Rushmore. Part of the library's Hitchcock festival, the film plays at 2 p.m. for 25 cents and 7 p.m. for 50 cents. The library is at 209 East 500 South. At the Blue Mouse: "A Nos Amours" is about a sensual teenage girl and her mixed-up family; "Harold and Maude" returns; "Manhattan" is a wistful masterpiece about modern relationships, with Woody Allen bouncing between Diane Keaton and Mariel Hemingway; and "Skyline" shows the adventures of Gustavo, a Spanish photographer seeking a job with Life (or maybe Newsweek) in the Big Apple. The Mouse is at 260 East 100 South. The Salt Lake Media Center presents two films with similar themes. "All That Heaven Allows," a '50s melodrama, looks at the romance between widow Jane Wyman and gardener Rock Hudson that is frowned on by the social forces in their town. The film plays on May 24 at7:30p.m.,May25at7:30p.m.andMay26at5:30and9:30p.m. Twenty years later, director Rainer Werner Fassbinder presented another May-September romance in the German "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul." This time the romance is between a sixtyish German floorwasher and an Arab mechanic. The film plays on May 24 at 9:30 p.m., May 25 at 5 : 30 and 9 : 30 p.m. and May 26 at 7 : 30 p.m. The films are presented in the auditorium of the Salt Lake Art Center, at 20 South West Temple. The Jay Welch Chorale presents its sixth annual spring concert at East High School on May 24 at 8 p.m. The program includes Mozart, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Gershwin. Tickets are $5 at the door and $4 in advance at ZCMI and Datatix outlets. The Zephyr, at 301 South West Temple, presents Screamin' Jay Hawkins on May 23-25. The Steve Flygare Quartet is scheduled to play at D.B. Cooper's at 19 East 200 South on May 27 at 8:30 p.m. The program is also broadcast liveonKUER. THEATRE The hills are alive with "The Sounds of Music," starring Zelie Daniels and Robert Peterson at Pioneer Memorial Theatre at the U. of Utah. It plays nightly, except Sundays, through June 8 at 8 p.m. A June 1 matinee is at 2 p.m. "I Remember Mama" plays at the Little Bowery of Promised Valley Playhouse (132 South State) Wednesday-Saturday through June 1 at 7 : 30 p.m. A June 1 matinee is 2 p.m. Sam Shepard's "Fool For Love" is presented by the Salt Lake Acting Company, Thursday-Saturday through June 1 at 8 p.m. Sunday shows are 7 : 30 p.m. It's presented at 168 West 500 North. The Promised Valley Playhouse presents "Show Boat," Wednesday-Saturday through May 25 at 7:30 p.m. The Playhouse is at 132 South State. ETCETERA The Kimball Art Center in Park City presents an exhibit by Ansel Adams 15 prints taken between 1941-49. The Main Gallery features works from 14 artists in the Salt Lake group Artspace. "Journey with Digistar" at the Hansen Planetarium, 15 South State, plays Monday through Saturday at 4:30 and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 and 4 p.m. "The Clio Awards" follow the 7 p.m. star shows and afternoon shows on the weekend.
