Will Pan World rain on Silver Kicks' parade? by DAVID HAMPSHIRE Record editor The Park City Silver Kicks are basking in the glory of Monday's win in the first round of the playoffs. But there's a cloud on the horizon. The Silver Kicks, Park City's adult women's soccer team, pounced on the lowly Salt Lake Pepsi Express, 6-1, on the high school field to advance to the second round of the league playoffs. But the cloud is in the shape of Park City's next opponent, Pan World, which has 15 wins and two ties in 17 league games this season. Two of those wins came against the SilverKicks: a 15-0 massacre of a short-handed Park City team last fall and a 4-1 win over a more respectable opponent last week. "We have our work cut out, I think," said Mona Cotter, a member of the Park City team. "If we can hold them to 4-1 again we'll be doing well." The win over the Pepsi Express and the loss to Pan World were only two thirds of a busy Park City schedule over a recent six-day period. Here is a summary of those games: Pan World 4, Park City 1 The Silver Kicks actually held the lead for about 15 minutes against this powerhouse team, unbeaten in league play this season. Cheryl Johnson gave Park City a 1-0 advantage after Pan World had been called for obstruction in front of the goal. Tori Pillinger took the indirect free kick for the Silver Kicks, tapped the ball over to Johnson, who boomed it past the Pan World goalie. Park City kept the lead until a defensive lapse helped Pan World tie the score with about 30 minutes played. A Silver Kick halfback attempted a pass back to her own fullback, but the pass was intercepted intercept-ed by a Pan World forward who went in alone on Park City goalie Heidi Hunter. "Pan World is the type of team that you don't make a lot of mistakes on," said Garry Moore, the Silver Kicks' coach. Pan World made it 2-1 before the half on a comer kick which was headed neatly into the net. Another Silver Kick blunder led to the third Pan World goal as Hunter shanked a goal kick in the direction of an opposing forward. A ni(y passing combination involving several Pan World players led to the fourth goal, Moore said. "We had a few opportunities; we just couldn't put it into the net,'.' he said. -,,v,- f w Orem 2, Park City 2 These two teams, which had struggled to a 2-2 tie the previous week in Orem, did it again Saturday in Park City. And again the Silver Kicks couldn't take advantage of enough scoring opportunities. "We had the ball in their half of the field probably 60 or 70 percent of the time," Moore said. Orem took a 1-0 lead when Park City goalie Heidi Hunter was taken out of the play by a collision with an opposing forward. She wasn't hurt, but was unable to recover in time to prevent the goal. A newcomer to the Park City team, I.aura Lockwood, made it 1-1 after a corner kick by Ann Gasparotti was directed in front of the goal by Mona Cotter. ' After Orem had moved ahead 2-1, the Silver Kicks came back again. This time it was Nina Cohen doing the honors on a chip shot from the left side of the goal mouth. That game was the last of the regular season for the Silver Kicks. They finished with a 2-12-3 record, good for eighth place in the 10-team league. Park City 6, Pepsi Express 1 Pepsi, which finished last in the league standings, looked flat Monday Mon-day while the Silver Kicks sparkled. It was the second meeting between the two teams in little more than two weeks. "We beat Pepsi Express by the identical score that we beat them by two weeks ago, 6-1," Moore pointed out. Leading the Park City scoring were Lockwood and Cotter,' "each with two goals. Karen Rosenberg and Nina Cohen scored the other two. More said the Park City edge was actually greater than the score indicates. "We probably had, I would say, at least 20 shots right at the goalie." The game was played at Butler Field in Cottonwood Heights. The Silver Kicks, minus two key players, must now brace themselves for Pan World. Moore said forward Tori Pillinger and fullback Nicki Koch will miss the game. Koch, incidentally, may have made her last appearance for the Silver Kicks. Moore said she is moving to Salt Lake City and may represent the University of Utah women's team beginning in the fall. i Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 9 :30 a.m. at Riverside West, i 1500 West 600 North in Salt Lake -City:'""---- " |
