Sundance musical to start down the yellow brick road Friday production of "Pippin." Star Hayner Roman returns to Sundance after five years to play the role of the Wicked Witch. She delighted Sundance audiences with her comic abilities in the musical revues performed at Sundance in the early years of the theater. . . The show is directed and choreographed by Jayne Luke; associate and technical director is On Friday, June 14 the Sundance Summer Theatre will open its 16 th season with "The Wizard of Oz," known to millions as the MGM film musical made in 1939. The film was dedicated to people everywhere who are "young at heart." Since that time it has been delighting audiences, audi-ences, young and old, with the story of a farm girl from Kansas who takes a journey into a miraculous fantasy land. "The Wizard of Oz" was selected for the Sundance season by Robert Redford. The show poses unique problems when transferred from the screen to the stage. Director Jayne Luke says, " It is not my desire to just try and recreate the film, even though it is a classic and so well loved. I am not MGM. The actress playing Dorothy at Sundance has blonde hair. Judy Garland was to have worn a blonde wig in the movie, but it was discarded when filming began. "I wasn't looking for a Judy Garland lookalike, but I did want someone who had Judy's sincere, ? wistful quality."" . " "This is a story about finding home within yourself. "It is so complex, I had to stage scenes on the hill, all around the audience," he said. "We built a yellow brick road that goes off into the woods. I have six ensemble players who must do all the parts played by the hundreds of extras in the film. They play munchkins, jitterburgs, Oz people, involving 10 costume changes. The real show might be backstage!" The role of Dorothy will be played by Tammy Jo Willis from Syracuse, New York. She is currently studying theater at Brigham Young University. Univer-sity. , David Morgan, who has received several acting awards for his performances at Brigham Young University, plays the Scarecrow. The role of the Tinman is played by Mark Gollaher, recently seen as the King in Brigham Young University's production of "The King and I." Craig B. Call plays the Cowardly Lion. "The Wizard of Oz" will play nightly except Sundays until July 13 when "Camelot" opens. It will then alternate on even calendar nights with "Camelot." Tickets prices are Monday, $4.50; Tuesday, Wednesday, Wednes-day, Thursday $5.50; Friday and Saturday reserved seats, $6.50, grass seating $6. Reservations are required every night except Monday. Showtime is at 8:30 p.m. Dress warmly and get there early to assure a good seat. |
