Show Looking or something different to do this weekend? Here are a few suggestions, compiled by Park Record entertainment critic Rick Brough. Unless otherwise noted, events listed below will take place in Salt Lake 1. 1 1 v The Salt Lake City Library presents "Rose Marie" on June 14 to continue its MacDonald and Eddy festival. Jeanette plays an operetta star who travels to the Northwest to find her fugitive brother (James Stewart) while Mountie Nelson Eddy seeks the same man. It features the legendary "Indian Love Call" and David Niven in a brief appearance as Jeanette's suitor. It plays at 2 p.m. for 25 cents and 7 p.m. for 50 cents. The library is at 2(19 East 500 South. MOVIES At the Blue Mouse: Watch out for Leatherface and "The Texas ( hainsaw Massacre"; "Big Meat Eater" is the premiere of what could be another classic strange movie. The plot is about a murdered mayor, the hulking killer Abdullah and aliens seeking radioactive resources in a septic tank; "Seventeen," the film about bored, irritable teens, won the docuementary prize at the 1985 Park City festival; and you'll want to "run away! run away!" to see "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." The Mouse is at 200 East 100 South. The Utah Media Center continues its Judy Garland festival with "A Star is Born". Judy plays a young star whose Hollywood career waxes while her drunken husband (James Mason) finds his is waning. Directed by George Cukor, the film plays on June 14 and 15 at 7 p.m. and June 16 at 5 and 10p.m. In Orson Welles' "The Stranger," Welles is excellent as an escaped Nazi war criminal about to marry an innocent New England woman (Lorctta Young), but pursued by a federal agent (Edward G. Robinson.) It plays on June 14 at 10 p.m., June 15 at 5 and 10 p.m. and June 16 at 8 p.m. The films play in the auditorium of the Salt Lake Art Center, 20 South West Temple. The Snowbird Resort presents the jazzrock group Spyro Gyra on June 14 in its third annual appearance in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Tickets at $10 in advance, $12 on the day of show are available at Cosmic Aeroplane, Smokey's Kecords and Datatix outlets. IwllTmTftV Showtime is S p.m. iUUSlv The Oratorio Society of Utah presents Mendelssohn's "Elijah" with the Utah Symphony and New York soloists on Sunday, June 16 at Symphony Hall (123 South Temple) at S p.m. Tickets, at $12 and $8, are available at the Symphony Box office. The Triad Center and United Concerts presents Wynton Marsalis on June 17, 7 p.m., at the Triad theater. Tickets, $13 advance and $15 day of show, are available at Datatix outlets. Revisit the '60s with the "Happy Together Tour 1985" at the Salt Palace on June 17, with the Turtles, Grass Roots, Gary Lewis and the Playboys and the Buckinghams. Reserved tickets, at $12.50, are available at the Palace and all Datatix outlets. Showtime is 8 p.m. The Triad Center's free. noontime concerts present Dave Compton on June 13 and 18, The Tempo Timers on June 14, Lori Lynner on June 17 ! and the Trenches on June 19. The Zephyr Club, at 301 South West Temple, presents Jack Mack I and the Heart Attack on June 13-15 and Rare Silk on June 18. I Park City Performances takes you back to the lusty, brawling days of "Chicago" at the Egyptian Theatre on Park City's Main Street. Mjm M MMMJ "The Wizard of 0" nightly except Sundays through July 12 at 8:30 p.m. The theater is outside so be sure to dress warm. Sam Shepard's "Cowboy Mouth" is presented June 13-15 at 8 p.m. on a new theater on the third floor of the Herald Building (167 South Main). A Sunday, June 16 performance is at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 and $7.50 for the Friday night gala. Join El Gallo and company for the perennial hit "The Fantasticks" at Theatre 138 ( 138 South 200 East). It plavs Thursday-Saturday through June 2!) at 8 p.m. James Arrington presents "The Farley Family Reunion" at the Little Bowery of Promised Valley Playhouse (132 South State) Wednesday-Saturday through June 22 at 7:30 p.m. A June 22 matinee is at 2 p.m. "Annie" comes to the Triadtheater Amphitheater (300 West and South Temple) playing Tuesday-Saturday through June 22. Tickets are $5 and show times are 8:30 p.m. A matinee on June 22 is at 5:30 p.m. The Kimball Art Center at the bottom of Main Street in Park City presents the Utah Watercolor Society group show, an annual juried display, plus the metaphysical paintings of Robert Jjetrakian. The exhibit runs until The Hansen Planetarium, 15 ETCETERA South State, presents "Journey with Digistar" on Sunday at 2 and 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday at 2, 4:3() and 7 p.m. and Saturday at 4:30 and 7 p.m. "The Clio Awards" follow the 7 p.m. star shows. "The Beatles: The Music That Changed the World" plays on Thursday at !t p.m. and Saturday-Sunday at 3 p.m. |
