Show Two Champions !o Collide rara-ski Maces ibis Weekend Bre'tt Pendleton, the 1980. Para-ski Champion and Nick Kingery, the 1979, 78 and 77 Para-Ski Champion, both ot Salt Lake City will continue their longtime rivalry on the slopes and in the air at Park West Ski Resort on February 28 and March 1 for the title of 1981 Para-Ski Champion. Para-Ski competition is a combination of two of the most exhilarating of sports, skiing and skydiving. Contestants make four parachute para-chute jumps from a helicopter helicop-ter flying 3,200 feet above , the drop zone which will be Park West Ski Resort. The competitor is aiming at a 10 centimeter (334 inches) target. tar-get. Competition and the skill of the jumpers is very high and it is not unusual for several jumpers to make all four jumps with perfect marks, hitting the "disc" and requiring a jump off. To increase the difficulty of the accuracy jumping, the target will be placed on the side of the hill as it is in international interna-tional Para-Ski competition. Besides parachuting, each contestant will need all of his racing skills for two Nastar giant slalom runs. The scores in both events are combined to determine winners. win-ners. Meet director and organizer, organ-izer, Linda Miller of Salt v Lake City, is expecting a field of 70 competitors for this event sponsored by Miller Lite and Skis Dynastar with donations from Sunset Sports, Mother Karens and several parachute manufacturers manufac-turers making the total purse K well over $5,000. p The meet will have compe-L compe-L titors from all over the r United States and Canada, r many as far away as y Washington DC, Florida and I Maine. The male and female ! with the lowest combined scores for both events will be designated U.S. Para-Ski , Champion by the U.S. Parachute Association. Pre-contest favorites are ' Brett Pendleton with over 1,000 jumps and 12 years of w racing experience and Nick Kingery, 1,200 jumps and 3 years on the Snowbird ski patrol. Out of state favorites are Tom Keineke, Montana, Mike Mangold, Pennsylvania, Pennsyl-vania, James Garade, Illi- nois, all of whom are on the 1980 U.S. Para-Ski Team which will be competing in Europe in April. Jessie Farrington, of Puyallup, Washington is expected to be strongly challenged for the women's national title by Joy Burtis, Seattle, Washington. Other strong competitors will be Maria Ledbetter, Salt Lake City and Cheryl Rowe also of Salt Lake City. |
