Show Council Sets Public Hearing The Park City Council has scheduled a public hearing to consider an ordinance which would establish a commission to review construction in the two Park City Historic Zones The city's planning commission is recommending the council establish a Park City Historic District Commission which would review construction as to its compatibility with surrounding buildings and the character of the districts. Currently the planning commission is responsible for all development in the city, but if the historic commission is founded, it would be responsible for reviewing construction projects in historic areas. , Assistant City Planner Kevin Hooper said the planning commission has written an ordinance creating the historic commission, which defines it purposes, powers and duties. The ordinance needs the approval of the city council and it is seeking input from local residents at a hearing set for Thursday, March 19 at 5 p.m. Hooper said the planning commission decided to form the separate governing body to reduce its "backlog" of work. The commission, he said, wants a specific group of. people who have expertise in historic preservation and who are interested in preserving architectural styles and design reflecting phases of the city's history. City planners are not encouraging replication of the older, existing buildings, Hooper said, but rather it is supporting complimentary design and construction. It would be the historic commission's job to decide if a proposed project is architecturally and historically compatible, he explained, adding the members could guide developers in building the best design. Hooper believes "there needs to be some latitude for new and innovative design", but he stresses that construction be compatible with existing structures. The oridnance, Hooper concluded, has been needed for a "long time". |
