Show Sterling Scholarship Offered to Students Each year there are many scholarships which high school seniors can apply for, but one of the most prestigious scholarships offered of-fered in the State of Utah is the Sterling Scholarship Award, which is sponsored by the Deseret News. This scholarship program was initially begun for students living in the Wasatch front area. However, the program will now be available for students living in the northeast north-east section of the state. Recently, the school superintendents superin-tendents of Daggett, Duchesne, Du-chesne, Morgan, North Summit, Sum-mit, South Summit, Park City, Rich, Uintah and Wasatch School Districts collectively decided to provide pro-vide the necessary financial support for a Sterling Scholars Schol-ars program to begin in the 1980-81 academic year. The competition for the Northeastern Sterling Scholars Schol-ars Award will be open to senior from high schools in the participating school districts dis-tricts listed above. Each high school may nominate one student in each of the following 12 categories: (1) English, (2)SpeechDrama, (3) Mathematics, (4) Social Science, (5) Science, (6) Foreign Language, (7) Visual Arts, (8) Vocational Education, Educa-tion, (9) Homemaking, (10) Business Education, (11) Music, and (12) General "Scholarship. High schools" are not required to make an entry in all 12 categories, v and students may be nominated nomi-nated in only one category. Following the nominee selection at the local high school level, there will be a final judging process to determine the winners and runners-up, which will be made on the basis of scholarships, leadership, citizenship, and character as demonstrated through activity activ-ity and interest in the particular area selected. The winners in each category will receive a full tuition scholarship to a post high school institution of hisher choice in the state of Utah, and will also receive a $200 cash award. Runners-up Runners-up will receive a full tuition scholarship and a $100 cash award. All high school seniors will receive a certificate; certifi-cate; region winners and runner-up will receive a pin. High school nominations for the Sterling Scholar Award will be made on March 1, 1981, and the final judging will be held on April 15, 1981. However, seniors should contact' their high school principal or counselor as soon as possible to enable them to begin to make the preparations necessary to enter this competition..
