Show Eagle Update News from Carl Winters Middle School "it'S NICE TO KNOW THAT SOMEONE CARES" By Mindi McMillan . On Dec. 19, 1980, a Friday, 14 students hurriedly put on their best manners to escort 22 senior citizens to a luncheon. The luncheon was prepared by the eighth grade foods class as a project to show their appreciation for the elderly. The day before the luncheon the students prepared many delectable dishes. There was spaghetti and meatballs, brocolli with cheese sauce, tossed salad and apple crisp for dessert. The spaghetti and meatballs were prepared by Becky Stover, Michelle Damon and Wendy Blackbourne, The brocolli with cheese sauce was made by Jason Lawson, Kenton Lewis, and Mike Mahoney. The salad was prepared by Jimmy Finne-gan Finne-gan and Alan Pyle. The scrumptous dessert by Barbara Bar-bara Ford, Mindi McMillan, and Cindy Thaller. The day of the luncheon the senior citizens were escorted to beautifully decorated tables by the hostesses Mindi, Barbara, and Cindy. Where they chatted and ate happily. After the senior citizens had left, the fun began! The clean up! Students grudgingly grudg-ingly turned on the water to clean up, but then the kids also got to eat the leftovers! YUMMY! All in all it was a good, warming day. As one senior citizen said, "IT'S NICE TO KNOW THAT SOMEONE CARES!" BACK TO SCHOOL!! By Holly Daines Students at Carl Winters Middle School slowly walked in the school doors on January 5, 1981 trying to remember their hall locker combinations. Most everyone every-one had new clothes on or a new piece of jewelry. As you walked down the hall you could hear all sorts of compliments. Jillbette Fletcher told me all of the fun and exciting things she did over. the holidays. She got a skating outfit and new skates, a ski suit and a few clothes. She liked these things the best. Eric Nielson said he got a new jogging suit and some weights. Sounds like he's going to get into shape! A few other people, Mindi McMillian and Mike Mahoney, told me they got clothes and a lot of other neat things. It sounded like everyone ran around and yelled and screamed over New Yeirs, too. Now we all have to get back to the grind of school work. ine homework has started again and the worries of the oral reports. Over the holidays, it sure was nice to sleep in. Now we get up around 6:30 and 7:00. We go back to bed early, too. The teachers are getting back in the swing of things, too. Happy New Year?! SKHNG--FROM A TO F Another Ski Program? Yes, some students in the 7th and 8th grade at Carl Winters Middle School are taking ski lessons every Tuesday at Park City Resort. Starting January 13, 1981, and going until March 3, 1981. The lessons cost $32.00. The lessons have several different levels, ranging from A to F. The group you are in depends on your skiing ability. A is the first time; B is wedge turns; C is Basic Christy; D is beginning parallel, E is advanced parallel, and F is learning to race and mountain moun-tain experience. Students not attending the ski program have a choice of Tennis lessons at the Park . City Raquet Club, Swimming and Racquet Ball (combination) (combina-tion) at the Prospector Athletic Club, and Bowling at the Memorial Building. Also, there is Cross Country Skiing at the Park City Golf Course. All of these cost $32.00. For some of the students who are not able to do any of the activities, there are mini-classes at the school. Each Tuesday afternoon students will participate in two one hour long classes. These classes will include: Art, Music, and Sewing. Efforts were made to make the mini-classes both in-tcresting in-tcresting and educational. At the end of the ski lessons, there is a special ski and race day provided by the resort for Middle School students enrolled in the program. After March 3; 1981, the students will go back to work. GUESS WHO? By Mike Mahoney Who has hazel eyes, brown hair, and is four feet nine inches tall? On her own time, you could probably find her doing what she likes to do best, skiing or out ice skating, or maybe playing tennis in the summer. She has lived uptown all of her life. She has two cats,. P.J. and Spider! Rex, her brother, is a sophomore at Park High. Her dad, Mel, works with the school district, dis-trict, and her mom, Peggy, works at a dentist office. She is thirteen and is in eighth grade. Her favorite class is Journalism because she is a very good writer. Her favorite foods are broccoli, steak, and clam chowder. Her favorite color is green. Her fantasy is to own her own horse, and she would also like to go to France. She , would, like to become an interior "designer. She likes living in Park City but if she had a chance she would think it would be fun to live somewhere else. The object of the game is to get ; the ball into the defensive team's goal. When the fifth and sixth graders have eaten lunch, . they go down into the gymnasium and play crab soccer against class teams. When the fifth and sixth graders' lunch period . is over, the seventh and eighth graders also play crab soccer against class teams. After all the day's games have been,, played, Mr. Leatham, the teacher in charge of the games, takes the winning and losing teams scores and writes them down to' be typed up on the next morning's announcements. This way the classes will know where they stand. If they're losing, they will try harder and if they're winning they will try just as hard. I asked Cheryl Burns what she thought of playing crab soccer she said "I think it's fun and exciting playing crab soccer. When the other two classes are playing I feel like playing right along with . them, cause it's so fun." Middle School's crabs are having fun playing crab soccer, it seems. STUDENTS FACE DANGER ON PARK AVENUE By Jillbette Fletcher Students at the Middle School face the danger of getting hit or run over by motor vehicles during the winter months. The number of cars on Park Avenue has increased so rapidly in the last few years that it has become increasingly unsafe for the walking students and those being unloaded and loaded from passenger cars. The danger is compounded during dur-ing winter storms due to lack of visibility and icy conditions. condi-tions. The auto drivers using Park Avenue during the time students are arriving and leaving the school are generally in a hurry to get to work on time and they are traveling too fast to stop; to see a student open a door; or crossing the street. After a storm or frosty nights, people tend to be in such a hurry that they do not scrape thejrost and snuw"off thefront'of the car enough to See the children and their visibility is almost entirely lost. This reporter asked some students if they thought there was a danger and what they thought could help ?A prevent this danger. Mr. Johnson said, "That there should be another Main Street instead of only Park Avenue." Alan Pyle said "put speed limit signs up." Pam Finegan said "put stop lights up on the corners." : Mike Mahoney said "put speed bumps on the street." Mr. Leatham, "increase police patrols in the area during beginning and ending school hours." Thanks, students and teachers for your cooperation and great ideas.' NEW SCHOOL NURSE By Darrell Gamble The Park City School District has hired a new school nurse. Her name is Charlene Gamble. In the next year she plans on doing immunization reports. She also is planning on a drug and alcohol abuse inservice programs . and physical examinations. She works on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Mrs. Gamble is the mother of 8 children. The family has recently moved to Park City from Twin Falls, Idaho, where they had a 10-acre apple orchard. They are now building a house in Pinebrook. WHICH CLASS NEXT? By Michelle Blacil Which class next, asked some of the eighth grade students of Carl Winters Middle School. Not an ordinary question for an eighth grader to be asking. But there's a logical answer. Every 4 weeks the eighth grade students rotate their schedule of courses. We keep our main subjects such as: Language, Math, History, His-tory, Spelling and Science. But first period and seventh period we work in mini--lassesjsuch as: P.E., Home-Economics, Home-Economics, Crafts, Journalism, Journal-ism, Speech, Economics, Calligraphy, and Art. Whichever class you are assigned to is fun and challenging. Some of the things done in each class are as follows; in |
