The fighting Park City Miners : sailed past an overconfident over-confident South Summit basketball bas-ketball club at Kamas last Friday .evening to post an impressive 62, to 53 win over the traditionally-tough Wildcats. Wild-cats. . ' . . - The hard-fought victory , boosted the Miner's record to 4 and 1 for the season and ranked .'them fourth in the State for class 1A schools. The rankings, which appeared appear-ed in Tuesday's Salt Lake Tribune, showed Dugway (Park City's only loss) as the first place team in class 1-A, with Kanab and St. Joseph in second and third places.' Playing without Postman Mike Gebauer who quit the team last week for personal reasons;., the. Miners were first to put points on the. scoreboard with a basket by Jeff Smith, Gebauer's replacement. re-placement. The- first quarter found Coach Kent Trailer's Wildcats Wild-cats worthy opponants as v they traded points backhand forth with the Miners result-ing result-ing in a 14-14 score at the . end of the period. Feeling that one of the season's most important victories was within their grasp, the Miners poured it on during the second period, soaring ahead of the Wildcats Wild-cats by seven points. Coach Reid brought Jeff Murnin off the bench in the second period, substituting him for various other players throughout the game. Murnin Mur-nin scored 10 points during the game which placed him third in total scoring behind Jeff Smith who racked up 14 points for the Miners and .Center Martv Cowin who was the top scorer with 22 points. The Miners went to the locker room after the first . half feeling somewhat com-fortable com-fortable about .their seven - point lead with the score standing at 28-21. . Determined to pull themselves them-selves out of the hole dug for them bv the Miners in the first half. South Summit came out fighting and soon . caught up with Park City midway through the third . quarter, . Faced with a 7-point lead turned into a 5-point loss, the Miners once again came alive and pulled ahead of the Wildcats by five points at the end of the quarter. Coach v Bruce Reid said the third quarter was the turning point of the game ' in which the Miners, down by five, made the winning commitment which ultimately won them the game. . Once more in the lead 44 to 39. the Miners went into the final period with confidence confi-dence and a commitment to win. The' Miners outscored South Summit 19 to 14 in the fourth quarter, winding up ahead 62 to 53 at the end of the match. . Although South Summit shot 50 from the field for . the match compared to Park Citv's 38, the Miners took 17 more shots which clearly made them the aggressors. "We had more steels, more rebounds and generally played harder," said Coach Reid. "We wanted to win and did," he concluded, calling it a good "character win" to beat the traditionally tough Wildcats on their own court. |
