Show January Resort Report Park City Ski Area is getting ready for a very busy January. To get the New Year off to a good start, the town of Park City has scheduled its Second Annual Winter Carnival to begin on Thursday. January 10 and conclude the afternoon of Sunday. January 13. The Winter Carnival festivities will begin when Olympic medal winner Stein Eriksen pushes out of the starting gate at 10:00am on January 10. forerunning 1980's first Town Race. The race run will be decorated with Winter Carnival banners and colored balloons. At the finish, refreshments will be available for those who just wish to observe the fierce competition between town folk teams. The Town Race will be sponsored by Wolfe's Sporting Goods, a local Park City business, and after the race they will sponsor an awards party for the competitors. Action for the Winter Carnival will again pick up at 7:00pm at Prospector Square Athletic Club for a Volleyball Round Robin. The remaining three days of the Carnival will include an Alpine Race for youths, a square dance. Park City's Second Annual Winter Carnival Dog Sled Race, two hot air balloon races, a "Skiobsledog" relay (this relay is for children 14 and under, with 3 children on a team. The first child will race over a cross-country ski track, tag the second child who will be on Alpine skis and must complete an obstacle course before tagging the third child, who will complete the relay with a dog sled run), an evening broom hockey game, a cross country adult relay that will begin with the competitors running down Main Street to the Golf Course with skis on - hand, round robin tennis, a racquetball clinic and an awards ceremony. i During the Winter Carnival, the Frontier Airlines Wally Wasatch familiarization tour will arrive in Park City with approximately 120 travel agents. The travel agents will spend two days in Park City looking oyer the facilities and getting involved in Park City's winter atmosphere. On January 12 the group will race in a Park City Nastar Race in the morning and participate in a comical obstacle race in the afternoon before attending an awards party. The awards party is being held at the Mid-Mountain Lodge, the only on-hill lodge in the Rockies. While Wally Wasatch participants are getting ready to leave Park City, airline employees from most airline companies will begin arriving Sunday. January 13 for NAASF Airline Ski Week registration. This year Park City is expecting 1 .200 to 1 .500 airline employees ranging from stewardesses and pilots to ground crew members participating in the four day airline week. Registration will begin on the 13th and the action starts on Monday. January 14 with race clinics offered by Park City's Ski School and practice areas open for alpine race training. On Tuesday, January 15. the race clinics will continue but the first phase of competition will also begin with a "C" Race beginning at 12:00pm and a family race scheduled to start at 2:30pm. Wednesday. January 16 will be the last day to register and the competitive tension will begin rising, for at 10:00am. "A" and "B" racers will begin their two run slalom race. The one run Giant Slalom Race for "A" and "B" racers will begin at 10:00am on ThursdayJanuary 17. In the afternoon, airline ski week participants will begin relaxing after two days of competition with a "Fun Obstacle Race" that is scheduled to begin at 2:00pm. And that evening, the time everyone has been waiting for, there will be an awards party that will surely run into the early hours of the morning. ' 1 The last part of the month will be devoted to Park City Ski, Area employees with a Park City Ski Corporation Employee Race on the 22nd, and to Park City townspeople who will have their second chance to add points towards the 1980 Tow n Race Championship Team with the second Town Race of the 1 980 season on January 3 1 . At Park City Ski area, January 1980 is coming in with a blast of activity that runs to the very last day of the month. Our Nastar races run every Wednesday; Saturday and Sunday. You can register at the race department until 1 1 :30am on the day of the race, and then enjoy the thrill of racing with our race staff at the 1 2:30pm Nastar start time.
