Show Friday Bomb Threat Evacuates Alpha Beta Alpha Beta shoppers found themselves checking out unexpectedly early last Friday evening when a bomb threat forced the evacuation of Park City's newest supermarket. An unidentified male caller reached the store at around 9:30 the evening of the 4th and told a store employee he wanted to speak to a ''manager." When the manager, who told The Record he wished to remain anonymous, picked up the phone, the caller said, "I'm going-to kill you and everybody else because there's a bomb in the store." According to the manager, the caller made no specific demands outside of threatening the lives of all those in the store at the time. Our un-named source, who admitted being very "nervous" about the situation, then got on the store public address system and asked shoppers to "please leave the store as soon as possible... there's been an emergency." As soon as he made the announcement, the manager was called to the phone again. He listened carefully as the all-too-familiar voice of the extortionist said only. "You're not cooperating with me" and hung up. The manager said he presumed the second call meant the caller obviously meant business and that he was apparently irritated at the absence of panic as the shoppers calmly left the store. Fortunately, there were only a few customers in the store and the evacuation went quickly and quietly. After the supermarket was emptied, a task force of Park City Police officers led by Chief Crowley conducted a complete search of the premisses. Unable to find the alledged explosive device, the officers left assuming that the call had been a hoax. Before leaving however, the officers notified store security of the situation, asking them to report anv suspicious occurances. The rest of that evening passed quietly and uneventfully at Alpha Beta and police are continuing an investigation into the matter. |
