Craig Cutler edges Mark Taft for third place In Saturday's Duaine Brown ski races, photo by Tom Prosek Roy, Ostbye Win Again The second race of the Duaine Brown Professional Ski Racing Grand Prix brought a repeat of the previous week's winners, Victor Roy of Copper Mt, Colorado and Jean Peter Ostbye of Salt Lake City, but there were added thrills and spills due to the longer steep section and the addition of another bump on Park West's Sidewinder run. Several racers met their downfall down-fall in the tight gates just after the first bump, in both Saturday's Slalom and Sunday's Giant Slalom, and there was a feeling among the crowd of an upcoming disaster in many of the races. However there was more than enough technically perfect races, and Victor Roy provided some of the most perfect. As had been the case the previous week, Roy was pushed to near perfection by his friend Rick Heid, and the difference in their first and second place finishes was less than one half second. Craig Cutler and Mark Taft both of Salt Lake City took third and fourth respectively. Strangely enough, Jean Peter Ostbye had a tough time Satuday on the slalom course he set, but also in a repeat from the earlier week's races, he came on strong Sunday and withstood a strong challenge from Roy to take the victory by .017 of a second. "Yes, I felt very strong today, said Ostbye after the race," but I was worried about Roy. He either has very fast skis or he skis them very fast on the flats." Roy's comment on the race was, ".017 of a second, I wonder if you can figure that close on a slide rule." Two new faces appeared in the consolation round as Rick Newton of Salt Lake City nipped Park City Ski instructor Johny Carpenter. Roy again was the leading money winner with a combined $700 for his first and second place finishes. The team standings have racers sponsored by Sunset Sports first with the Lift House, Beconta, Inc., and Wolfs running in that order. The next race of the series will be held at Park West March 25 27, with the possibility of two more following races at Alta in late April and early May. |
