Show 350 Enter Trib. Race Over 350 amateur racers, representing ski clubs throughout the Western States, competed here Saturday in the annual Tribune Classic ski race sponsored sponsor-ed by the popular Salt Lake daily. The race was first held at Alta in 1952. The GS course on Payday was reported to be extremely icy early in the day, producing a round of lightning fast times for expert racers, who were first out of the gate. Scott Hoffman, racing for Nordic Valley and just returning from World Cup competition in California, won the expert event for tne third year running, narrowly edging Park City's John Donner, who came in less than a second behind. Steve Banous of Snowbird clinched third place, still less than a second behind the winner. Maria Marichich took woman's expert honors, beating out teamates Doni Waldman and Stephanie Shumway, who placed, respectively, second and third, all three are from Sun Valley. Snowbird's Sandra Van Ert took first in the woman's intermediate class, with Leilani Soares of Park City taking a close second, lending credit to the competitive ability of the local racers. Jona Lyman of Snowbird was third. Blake Jebson, skiing for Timp-anogas, Timp-anogas, took first place in the intermediate boys division, edging edg-ing Bill Calton of Nordic Valley and Taz Murray of Snowbird. Brother and sister Todd and Torrey Benion, skiing for Snowbird Snow-bird each took first place honors in novice boy's and girl's competition. Park City racers Eric Hays and Marco Alvarez, however, how-ever, came in second, and third, not far behind Benion. Second and third place finishers in girl's novice competition were Pam Neilson of Nordic Valley and Becky Baird of Jackson Hole. Sarah Gaylord, a nine year old racer from Sun Valley, edged her cousin Hilary Shumway to win the girl's pee wee competition. Pay-ton Pay-ton Willet of Jackson Hole was third and Michelle Buck, skiing for Park City, placed fifth. Spencer Dominick of Jackson Hole took first place pee wee boys honors over Paul Anerson of Nordic Valley and Paul Oelrich of Snowbird, who finished second and third, respectively. torn mm n umum o.y.Jk .. l .
