Arts Festival We are convinced, and judging from comments we've had from . businessmen, artists and the general public, everyone else is convinced too that Arts Festival '77 was the best ever. The main purpose of the Arts Festival is, of course, to generate an awareness of the Arts, and of the Arts in Park City specifically, and to create business and good publicity for Park City. A secondary purpose is to help provide some of the operating budget for the Chamber. We succeeded on all counts. A detailed, 10 page, financial accounting is available in the office but a few figures follow that might be of interest to you. Total Expenses $22255.22 Total income $29518.10 Total profit $7262.88 The Arts Festival Executive Committee met on Thursday, September 22 to evaluate this year's festival and make suggestions suggest-ions for improving or changing next year's event. The committee made several recommendations. 1. New fee system. It was decided to change the present system of charging a booth fee of $15-$25 and a 10 commission fee on sales. It is difficult to process return fees for rejected artists and extremely difficult to police sales and get an accurate accounting from which to collect the 10. It was recommended by the committee that a more favorable way, both to the artist and the chamber, would be to charge a non-refundable $15.00 application applica-tion fee and an additional fee of $50.00 for those accepted in the show. 2. Dates. The committee felt it was important to set the dates for next year's festival now so that promotion work can be started as soon as possible. So.. .next year's festival will be August 12-20, with the 19th and 20th being slated for exhibitor days on Main Street. These dates will be released to Summit County officials, city officials, Utah Travel Council etc. to avoid conflicts in scheduling events for this area. It was also recommended to try and send artist applications out beginning Dec. 1, in order to give artists a better chance to arrange their schedules to work with our festival. We will also advertise in specific artists' magazines to encourage additional applicants from around the nation. 3. Positions. For next year it was recommended, both by the Chamber Board and the Arts Festival Executive Committee, that there should be a marketing director in addition to the Arts Festival Manager. This person would be in charge of all marketing and promotion, to possibly include workshops, performances per-formances and sale items such as posters and T shirt. 4. Format. It was decided to continue with the expanded format we tried this year, including workshops, performances perform-ances and various other arts experiences in addition to the exhibitor days. This year's festival served as a learning experience for all involved involv-ed in its preparation and should provide a firm stepping stone to an even bigger and better festival next year. Board Briefs A number of items were covered at the Chamber of Commerce Board meeting on September 15. Of most general interest were the following: Of major concern to the board has been the "community concern con-cern over new business develop ments in our area." The Board felt a need to voice their business position and did so by unanimously unanimous-ly supporting the following motion. "The Chamber of Commerce Com-merce supports any business development on commercially zoned property at long as the development is in good taste and in keeping with the tone of Park City." Prior to the motion a lengthy discussion was held in an attempt to clarify the Chamber's responsibilities respon-sibilities toward the business community and feelings toward projected growth in the area. The Board felt that the first responsibility of the Chamber should be the "promoting and expanding of commerce." That includes supporting free enterprise enter-prise and the establishment of businesses that encourage healthy heal-thy economic growth for the town. As far as selecting which businesses- should fill the designated desig-nated commercial areas of our town, the board felt that those decisions are, and should be, the responsibility of the Park City planning and zoning commission and the Park City Council. It is our hope, of course, that "in keeping with the tone of Park City" that new businesses will take pride in supporting and participating in community activities activ-ities and projects, as well as being productive and responsible business busi-ness people. V Sales Tax V sales tax to help fund a no fee transportation system for Park City will be on the ballot again in November. As I'm sure you know, this issue was narrowly defeated in its previous try and really deserves the support of the business people in our town. It is hoped that individual businesses will advertise in support of this issue in the local papers preceding the election to supplement supple-ment the Chamber telephone campaign and preparation of a flyer to be sent to boxholders. Chamber Membership The Board has decided to initiate a membership campaign for the 1978 to tie in with the Winter Kickoff dinner in November. Novem-ber. Decals will be ready soon for use in identifying member establishments estab-lishments and in advertising, for the area. Most businesses, I am sure, felt the direct results of the Chamber's efforts the week of Arts Festival and we know that everyone realizes that the Chamber Cham-ber needs financial backing to continue supporting you, the business person, not only during Arts Festival but all year long. Members received one very special offering recently when they were given a half price . advertising rate for the special winter issue of Utah Holiday Magazine. We hope to be able to offer more of these kinds of advantages in the future, and hope that all of you will JOIN THE CHAMBER in promoting Park City. What's Happening inTown This is a quiet time for Park City. A time to catch a break before ski season is upon us. Two regular summer attractions, the Mine Traine and the Gondola are closed until ski season but there is still plenty to do. |
