Show Panthers Win Two in Rough Play The Park City Panthers finally played the brand of soccer that everyone knew they were capable of by consecutively knocking over the Park City Astros in .an exhibition game on Wednesday and the powerful Wasatch team on Friday by identical 2-1 scores. The Panthers established a 2-0 I first half lead over the Astros on 1 goals by Center-Forward Billy Reed and Right-Inside Steve Toly, and then substituted freely for the remainder of the game. The Astros picked up their only score in the final quarter on a fine shot by Shawn Gleiden, who also threatened late in the game but failed to capitalize further on either a penalty shot or another fine opportunity. The game against Wasatch was magnificent, probably the best ever played by the fledging Panther team. The tide rolled up and down the field until near the end of the first half when Left-Halfback Scott Williams sent a beautiful high kick just under the Wasatch cross-bar. Minutes later Wasatch tied the score on a point-blank shot past first-half Goalie Alexander Holmsen. Both teams missed numerous, second-half chances until Toly dribbled the ball expertly past the Wasatch defenders and kicked the ball in for what proved to be the decisive goal. To be greatly commended were Goalies Holmsen and Mike Jarosz; Fullbacks Kevin Clausen and Billy Reed; Halfbacks David Van Luven, Stephen Holmsen and Scott Williams; and Forwards Toly, Paul Mawhinney and Ricky Williams. The Panthers will play the Astros again on Wednesday in a UJSA knockout tournament, and their next league game is on Saturday, October 29 against the Germania Rangers at 11:30 a.m. at Sunnyside Park in Salt Lake City. |
