The Park High Miners held North Summit even in the second half of last Friday's game in Coalville, but failed to overcome a 23 point halftime deficit to lose by a 38-15 margin. In perhaps their best outing of the season, the Miners matched the Braves more closely than the score indicated. Park City's defense was plagued, however, by their inability to stop the North Summit running game early in the contest and later falling victim to the "big play." The Miners held North Summit's Sum-mit's powerful running attack to only one touchdown in the second half, but gave up two scores quick in the opening minutes of the game and two more late in the half after getting on the board with a fourth down plunge by Bob Jarvis early in the second quarter. Park City moved the ball well throughout the game, returning to an emphasis on the passing game that was effective earlier in the season. The Miners threatened threaten-ed several times and could have put more points on the board if the Braves had not come up with key defensive plays to intercept two Cory Provost passes. - Senior safety Brad Goff had an outstanding day on defense, making numerous strong second half tackles, scoring the Miners second touchdown after a bad snap to the Braves' punter, and nearly intercepting a pass from North Summit quarterback Max Pace. Park City took the opening kick-off, but failed to move the ball for a first down and punted from deep in their own territory. The kick was blocked and rolled out of the endzone for a safety and the first two points for North Summit. The Miners have had the first quarter blues all season, falling behind at the start in every game but their initial encounter with Dugway.1 After a safety, the scoring team gains possession of the ball and the Miners were forced to kick to North Summit. The Braves promptly moved the ball in for a touchdown, scoring a 15 yard run by junior tailback Bart Richins. The coversion was missed and the score was 8-0. The Miner offense moved the ball to the North Summit 30 yard line before giving up the ball on : their second possession. Again, the Braves marched down the field, relying heavily on wingback Scott McQueen, who scored on a pitch-out from the two yard line. McQueen bulled his way over the goal for the two point conversion and North Summit led 16-0. As the first quarter came to an end, the Miners went to the air to mount their first successful drive. Starting on their own 20, Park City advanced to near mid-field on a second down quick opener pass from Cory Provost to freshman end Mik Geubauer, who raced for a 24 yard gain. Another short pass to senior fullback Howard Davidson gained 11 yards. After two handoffs to sophomore running back Mickey Henrion, Provost again passed to ' Geubauer on a third and 13 play. Gebauer rambled 31 yards to the North Summit 17 yard line. Davidson took a pass to within five yards of the goal and four successive handoffs to senior halfback Bob Jarvis took the ball in for the score. The point after split the uprights and it looked like Park City, only nine points behind, would mount a comeback. come-back. A short kick off gave North Howard Davidson breaks into the open for a big gain. Summit excellent field position at mid-field however. Scott Mc- Queen was stopped for short yardage on first down, but senior' quarterback Arlin Ovard kept the ball and slanted right on the next play to elude tacklers for a 25 yard gain. A costly facemask penalty against Park City added another 12 yards, half the distance to the goal, and North Summit was threatening again at the 12 yard line. The Miner defense got tough, shutting off the running game, but Braves quarterback Arlin Ovard dropped back and fired a pass to end Chris Vernon from the 17 yard line for North Summit's third touchdown. The coversion made it 24-7. Park City took over on their own 40 yard line after a facemask call against North Summit and looked like they would match the Braves score. A sideline pass . to Davidson brought the Miners across mid-field mid-field for a first down, but a quick toss to Geubauer went in and out of his hands. On the next play, Provost dropped back again under pressure, the pass was deflected high in the air off a charging lineman's chest, and North Summit's Scott Robinson made a diving interception. Taking over on the Park City 38, the Braves were stopped for two plays, but set up an effective screen pass to Bart Richins on third down for a 16 yard gain, even though the toss was less than picture-perfect. From there, Richins and McQueen punched out a first down at the eight yard line and North Summit scored in five plays, with McQueen sliding over for the touchdown from the two. ' The conversion was no good. Howard Davidson took the kick-off near the goal line and returned the ball to the 30. With time running out in the half, the Miners made a first down on a pitchout to Bob Jarvis for a 12 yard gain, but two plays later an incomplete toss to Geubauer in the backfield was ruled a lateral and a Brave defender recovered at the Park City 33. Davidson nearly intercepted a pass from quarterback Max Pace, who replaced Ovard, and the Miner defense stopped the Braves without a first down as the clock ticked away. On fourth down, Pace placed a perfect sideline punt, out of bounds at the Park City six inch line, and the Miners could only run out the clock and hope they wouldn't fall victim to a second safety. In the second half, the Miners stopped North Summit cold on their first two possessions, but couldn't mount an effective drive themselves until midway through the third period. Taking over at their own 36 yard line, the Miners quickly lost seven on a pitch to Mickey Henrion, but struck back suddenly sudde-nly when Provost spotted Howard Davidson open 20 yards down-field down-field and fired a perfect pass for a 27 yard gain overall. Another pass to Davidson was complete on the sidelines and the fullback battled his way forward for a 16 yard gain to the North Summit 29. Unfortunately for Miner fans, Provost rolled out on the next play under heavy pressure and fired a pass that was picked off by Scott McQueen, who ran the ball back to the line of scrimmage. The interception seemed to return the momentum to the Braves as they took advantage of Park City's weakness of the counter play up the middle which has bothered them all season, and gained large chunks of yardage. McQueen spurted for a 16 yard gain on the first play, and three plays later broke wide open for a 43 yard ramble to the Miner 6 yard line. On third down again, after the Braves were pushed back to the eight yard line, McQueen broke through on a counter play and went into the endzone untouched for North Summit's final score. The two point conversion made it 38-7. Park City failed to mount another good drive, but kept North Summit at bay with a heavy rush on quarterback Max Pace. Pace was sacked twice and hit hard several times after just getting the ball away on a pass, once causing the official to throw a flag for intentional grounding, even though the desparation pass was caught. The heavy rush caused a bad snap from center on an attempted punt with a little more than two minutes left in the game, resulting in the Miner's second touchdown. The snap sailed over punter Pace's head at the North Summit 35 yard line and Brad Goff scooped up the ball and ran in for the score. Bob Jarvis caught a pass from Provost for the two point conversion. The Miners will play dangerous South Summit this Friday in Kamas. I ' ''.''' f" I f c - -. , '.
