By Jean Piatt There are certain films that never age and remain classics. Few films of this caliber, however, are fantasies. It seems that children's films and fantasy films are deemed incapable of becoming classics. However, there are a few films of that genre that have survived the hard times of rejection and surfaced, in later years, to gain the recognition they deserve. The greatest master of children's films and fantasy animation is undisputedly Walt Disney. And the all time favorite for holding his fame is his film, Fantasia. After being shelved as unpopular for many years, the film resurfaced in the time of the beginning of the acid-drug culture and immediately became a camp film to them. People took their own particular favorite high and went off to see the film and reveal in the delights of its music. Instant classic. Since then, Fantasia has been re-released several times to be enjoyed again and again. Now the Disney people have a new trick up their sleeves. In a slow time for film release, since most distributors are waiting for the holiday rush, Disney has rereleased Fantasia. But, to add to its appeal, the sound track has been recorded in stereo. Now the symphonic sounds come to you in a stereo effect to further add to your pleasure while viewing the film. Add to the stereo the fact the new releases are excellent prints without the cracks and lines of the old prints, and you have a welcome restoration of a classic. The color and animation are crisp and clear, and the new sound heightens the brilliance. Fantasy comes alive, once again, in the hands of Disney. And all of you who have loved the film and seen it again and again have a welcome chance to see it in new glory. Interestingly enought, Fantasia has survived more from the attendance of young adults and adults than that of children. Admittedly, it really is more of an adult fantasy. Children tend to get bored with the music and images while adolescents up to adults can be carried by the combination of exceptional music and beautiful images. It is fitting that Disney.studios should add a sound track that pleases the more educated ear. Even if the kids are bored, this is one mom and dad can go to with them and enjoy. As for the rest of us, we can simply lean back and be transported into the fantasy world of a great animator who had a vision. |
