Show Leavitt Offers Insight into "M" Bldg. Fiasco The following article was written by Summit County Commissioner Com-missioner Dale Leavitt of Kamas and approved by the Board of Commissioners. In response to the discontent of the Park City Councilman and others on the Memorial Building. First let me point out again that it is not the function of County Government to subsidize any of the incorporated areas with facilities for recreation, meeting, places, cooking facilities, ladies lounges etc., unless it is a county wide project. Park City should be happy that the county is turning over to them a building, that if built today would cost over a million dollars, besides a grant of $147,000 to fix up the building and also put in something that is desirable for the city. In the last two and one half years the county has spent about $40,000 on the heating and plumbing, installing automatic pin setters for the bowling alley, and new electrical wiring. This is in addition to the money for operating costs. Does this outlay of county money mean that the Commissioners Commiss-ioners did not have an interest in the building? Have we done this much for any other incorporated city? The answer is no and we do not intend to try and satisfy any city in the county with these kind of expenditures. Park City thinks they get short changed on roads. The county maintains county roads all over the county. The Park City area, including Summit Park and Snyderville has about as many miles as either the North or South end of the county, with the exception of the two roads up Weber Canyon and Chalk Creek. These two roads are collector roads and the state provides the money for their maintenance. What does the county do for Park City for all the money that they send to the county seat is a question that is asked repeatedly, and the answer is still the sam:. We do as much or more than is being done for any incorporated area in the county. The reason for cities to incorporate is so they can govern their own area, leaving the county to govern the unincorporated areas. The County Coun-ty Commissioners have a complete com-plete interest in the county, and do not represent only the area that they live in. Yes, in the last forty years the county has done a poor job of maintaining and operating the building, could it be because it was not a legitimate county function, and consequently not enough county interest. We think that in spite of the controversy over the building, the city will do a much better job of running it, because they will have more pride in seeing that it is utilized better, and also taken better care of. We also feel it can be self sustaining. Why don't we bury the hatchet and try to get along without so many accusations, that leave a bitter taste in all of our mouths. The Commissioners invite communication com-munication and input from Park City in everything regarding the county and hope that we can work together better in the future than in the past for the benefit of all. We do not intend nor will we deceive anybody by telling someone one thing and someone else another. The only grants that the County has received with any sizable amount went to Park City $53,000 which went to the Park City Fire Department and the other grant for $147,000 to the Memorial Building. |
