Show a word from the police department By Sgt. Mike Crowley Editor's Note: This will be a weekly column. Police warehouses and evidence evid-ence rooms throughout the world are literally full of stolen merchandise mer-chandise that cannot be identified by its owner. A fact, that with just one precaution, could be completely eliminated. All valuable merchandise such as weapons, televisions, stereo components, and especially in our case, skis, are assigned serial numbers. These, sometimes difficult dif-ficult to locate, numbers make your article unique from thousands thous-ands of identically manufactured items. The Park City Police Department Depart-ment would like to recommend to our citizens, that they take just a few minutes of their valuable time and compile a list of their serial numbers. We would recommend that several copies be made and placed, if possible, in fireproof . containers (file cabinets, safe deposit boxes, etc.) This .would facilitate, in the event of a natural disaster, the replacement of your article by insurance companies. It would also completely eliminate the previously mentioned evid-enciary evid-enciary problem. We would also like to point out that if an item does not have a serial number, your social security secur-ity number can be scratched into some hidden surface very easily. In a closing paragraph we would like to mention that if for purposes of personal identification, identifica-tion, a citizen is required to produce a set of his or her finger prints, we would be more ..than happy to take these prints, (our serial numbers). We are at vour service. |
